Prince - to share? We ALL know what it's like to be a Prince fan - the excitement, the obsession, the anticipation, the drama, the highs, the lows - you get my drift.
NOTHING beats the feeling you get when you hear a Prince song on the radio, or see a video on TV, or read about him in a magazine or a billboard poster advertising his latest single/album/whatever. You want to spread the word and let the whole world in on our secret! Or do we? Now that he's no longer signed to a major label and has gone the independent route, do you miss the major marketing of Warner Bros? Or do you like having him as your very own little secret? Do we want him to hit the (commercial) big time again or do we want him all to ourselves?

I like having him all to myself. I used to be like a new convert to some religion - I just had to preach the good word to all my brothers and sisters! I made mixtapes like a muthafucka.
But I've definitely mellowed on that. I couldn't really give a shit whether the people I know dig Prince the way I do. And they probably never will. So why put up with them doing it half-assed? I'd rather just keep the bliss to myself.

that's one of the reasons why i love the whole purple realm: it's like we're all bein let in on a little secret that only a few can figure out.

I wouldn't want Prince to get as big as Michael Jackson or Britney. He doesn't need to be a megastar, but a modest showing on the charts will do fine. Like having a song in Billboard's Top 20 every once in a while would be cool.

The only ones who want/need Prince to be "big" are those who need to live the "prestige" of following a "major" star.

It would be hard to convince many kids under 20, these days, but don't forget he WAS as big as Britney or MJ once upon a time. (Not that either of those artists' careers haven't nosedived).
He was #1 for S I X whole months with 'Purple Rain' - WOW! I, personally, WOULD like him to reach the (commercial) heights he used to - I hate having to answer the 'Is he still alive?', 'Does he still make music?' questions all the time - but I do like the feeling that exclusivity gives. Not MANY people may relate to my love for Prince but, for those who do - YOU guys! - it makes it all worthwhile. No matter how many (or few) records he sells, he gets props from the people who really matter - you won't find a single musician out there who doesn't respect his talent and artistry. If I was a musician I'd KILL to have an ounce of his talent.

Haha… What a sobering question!
OK, OK… Actually, I have to admit I’ve been like the girlfriend of the high school football captain in this regard. I enjoyed the entire world being in love with him, while still having “a little bit more of him” than everyone else as a cut-above-average fan. I used to LOVE it when my friends were like, “Damn!!! Where did you get those bootleg Martian import outtakes of Around the World in a Day?!?!” Now that I have Prince all to myself, I still adore him, but the “trophy” factor isn’t there. Mia culpa. I do appreciate, though, that now he's free to produce work as he wishes. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

What I've always ever really wanted is for Prince to put his soul into his music. As long as he does that, that's usually all I need. If Prince manages to focus on that but with the backing of a major record company, then we are talking serious enjoyment. Afterall, it is cool when we can reap the benefits too e.g. the videos, packaging, promotional campaigns, better prices, better business etc. I must admit, I do miss the buzz of walking into my local high street music store on the day of a new Prince release.
That was a beautiful feeling. [This message was edited Fri Feb 28 12:20:04 PST 2003 by Anji]

Agreed but I for one would love to see him kicking ass of some of those wanna be no singing ass pop sensations they call "STARS" these days! Exactly, I for one miss the talent factor that Prince brought to popular entertainment. In today's entertainment there is a serious lack of natural talent. They spend millions on flash, ass and bling to pathetically dazzle the masses. And they even have the nerve to parade wannabe's around on the networks, and after eight weeks of tears, fears and jeers, they make them "Idols". If it weren't so damn sad it would really be laughable. Prince has more talent in a strand of hair than anything that's passing for entertainment these days. That fact should recognized and he should be compensated accordingly. ___________________

Hmmm...was he 'shit' when he was everywhere in 1984-85? Pop success is not necessarily a BAD thing. It's the success he had before that is making it possible for him to be 'elite' now. I for one would not mind hearing him on the radio more often, and not just on some 80's retro show.

I love having him all to myself, and the rest of you bastards I love seeing him in more intimate venues (though he's just started doing this, but I'd like him to keep it up!). I like the access I get to the music & shows via the club. If he were major, MAJOR hot right now there would be none of that.
The only thing that makes me sad is as a result of being absent from the mainstream, the public is really missing out on an amazing musician/performer/ARTIST. BUT they'd only go so deep anyway, so maybe it doesn't make much difference...

Do we want him to hit the (commercial) big time again or do we want him all to ourselves? I gave my opinion on this sooo many times, so i'm just saying "he's doin fine!" P hates the radio. why would he want to be a part of the crap thats on it today? it might have been a thrill in the 80's or even the early 90's 2 hear him on the ghetto blaster, but not today. also, i like that he's chosen a less "pop" music genre like jazz/blues/funk. HE loves it, WE (or most of us) love it, and thats ALL that matters, no? we ALL r older now, & appreciate the more complex, unique music prince now delivers. its NOT 4 EVERYONE, just 4 the INTELLIGENT, PICKY, MUSIC SNOBS that we R. the ones who stand by him & really appreciate what "REAL MUSIC" is about... May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love.
