If you found Prince after 1995, I feel sorry for you.

It's been discussed out the ass, but hey, around here, what hasnt.

To the prince faNs that got into Prince after he changed his name, and then went back to listen to all his old stuff, I feel sorry for you.

You missed when Prince was played on college radio - "When Doves Cry" started out on college radio here in Atlanta. Pop stations wouldn't touch it.

You missed when Head was an underground HIT. Radio wouldn't play it, but DAMN it was all over house parties and school dances.

You missed it when people walked around high school DRESSED like him - three guys at my high school had the long jacket, "Rude Boy" button, scarf around the neck...of course, they DID wear pants, so they weren't fully committed.

Agh! You missed it all.

I know I sound like my old man talking about "back when Revolver hit the airwaves!!" but damn. I just can't tell you enough about it. Of course, it's back before there were CDs, walkmans, MTV.

Electricity.

The Wheel.

Air.

It's true. I certainly do feel left out. I can't even mention he's my fav cuz I get too many questions, and people unable to fathom that he had more than 2 hits, 1999 and Kiss. I just get sick of it.

Then it really irks me when people cite the "great" artists such as Blink 182, Alicia Keys, and Nickelback. I wanna go, yeah right, shove them up your ass, listen to Prince, but then, because all of today's acts are so sub-par, I'm able to say that Prince did it better no matter what they're talking about. That just makes me sound close-minded (keep in mind I'm comparing to today's pop stars, not all artists), because I can never surrender that any of these bubble gummers can do anything as good as Prince.

So I don't bother. I just live my life surrounded by amazing music, and feel sorry for those who live in their little bubbles of pop music.

I don't know what I was thinking writing this - I was delirious from sleep deprivation.

I don't feel sorry for any of you - you're right - there's great underground music going on right now, and I'm sure there's SOME of it I'm missing... and in 20 years there'll be some artist that's hailed like Prince - another do-it-all got a record contract with full creative control, change the face of music, drive a music style like nobody else kind of person.

There was Elvis. Hendrix. MJ.

Well, no, Elvis sang other people's songs. Hendrix was a puppet of Chas Chandler for the first two records. Michael Jackson pretty much followed the style and just made great records in the current most popular styles.

SO, HUNH, I GUESS no, there WONT BE another one like Prince.

So eat my ass. I'm not missing a thing.

WE would NEVER miss Emancipation, Crystal BAll, GOLD, TRC, CHAOS AND DESORDER… Many pearls that always gave JOY in repetion. Many young Prince fans (about 17/20) discovered Prince with NPG on the internet and love it. I am a fan since 1983, but I enjoy Pussy Control and NOW. Sorry I'm not old, but my imagination and readings do the work…

i think to miss out on actually hearing current Prince on the radio and on MTV is a bit sad, but some kids like their musicians indie-style. With prince you can get an F the system attitude with a huge budget on touring and releases. It's the best of both worlds currently. Having said this, i am glad I did get to live through it all!

I think that Otan only wanted to sail into the past and let us dream about remembering how it was...I am a fam since 1984 (I was 10)and this is my opinion:
in the 80's a real fam was more rewarded because of Prince' notoriety...after 1990 any of us at least once felt like a black sheep hearing somebody saying: "what, Prince? that skinny mother fucker with the high voice?"
But the reward is that now we all are loyal fams, all "tourists" have left.

What about those of us who were born too late to actually experience those (what sounds like) fabulous times? BUT THEN AGAIN: Im not all that sad that I missed that because you make it sound like there were alot of people in2 him around your age group and dont get me wrong, that's not a bad thing but in this day and age Im HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY that I get to enjoy Prince all by myself even though I play his music around my friends, some of them like it some of them dont but ITS OKAY because he's MY IDOL anyway! nana
So what I got in2 Prince in the 90's? shrug I was born in the 80's & just because I got in2 him in the 90's doesnt mean it stopped me from enjoying his music that came outta the 80's! SO WHAT SO WHAT! wink
I am just as much as a 'real' or 'understood' or 'seasoned' Prince fan as YOU ARE, I just havent been able to grab the full mold of it because I wasnt ALIVE...

I'm not dissing them - I'm a huge fan of all 3. I'm saying that their success CAN be repeated - before Elvis, there was Sinatra, Bing, etc. Now there's Justin T, Britney - those are all POP artists.

Hendrix is a maverick - not so much a pop star - but he's still just a guitarist/singer writer - didn't ink his first major label deal with creative control. And oh - he od'd.

But yeah - I'm not dissing you younger fans - don't get me wrong... I just wish you were all there in 81 when he was a freak, not a pompous evangelist.

I grew Up in the 80's as well&Remember things as well.Elvis&Sinatra were two different Cats all together&Sinatra didn't dig Elvis either.different type of Vibe. Both Huge but different Vibes&Styles all together.Jimi Played Bass&Drums as well also Bands of Gypsys is a Must have.He changed His Game twice in a 4 Year time period that speaks Volumes about that Cat.I Ain't seen Nothing like Michael Jackson Mania or Match what He has Done going from Being a Child Artist to Being a Credible Legit Adult Artist.none of these Teeny Bop Acts have Made a "off The Wall" Let alone started off with A Jam like "I Want You Back".

i sort of now what he's talking about. it's like me discovering miles in 1976 when i was 17 years old. yes, there were volumes of albums to buy and great music to experience, but no chance of going to the village vanguard to hear miles and trane play acoustic quintet stuff. i did see miles with an electric band, and i really enjoyed it, but it wasn't the same.
