"The love we make" sounds incredibly majestic doesnt it? A real piece of art.
musically and lyrically a beautifu and faultlessl piece and it also contains one of my fave lines
"sacred is the prayer that asks for nothing"

"sacred is the prayer that asks for nothing" Have you been raiding containers buried in the coromandel and partaking in your findings? Having said that, I agree with you. If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

That is a fabulous line in a fabulous song, but, I believe the line "blessed are we within this prayer, for in the new world we will be there" - or whatever it is - makes the previous line as it offers such hope. And I'm a cynical, sceptical, atheistic non-believer... who would quite like humanity to be the prayer he's talking about....
...though... I would much rather the god he was talking about then... the proto-Lovesexy god... as opposed to the Jehovah thang that he holds onto now...

Who Prince sings about (his God, his girlfriend, his wife, etc) should not matter to you. You should appreciate them for how they fit into your own life.
It's not like people are thinking about Mayte or Vanity in his love songs . . . they're thinking about their current loves or even past loves.

It's my favorite song off Emancipation, and that's my favorite lyric from the song. It's also my favorite of all of Prince's religious/spiritual/uplifting songs. Most of the time, they don't connect with me, but this one does. It's a beautiful and very uplifting song.

Disagree. The intention and the 'object' of the singer is vital and informs our understanding of what they are singing about nd makes us more or less inclined to like what the ae singing about. Unless, of course, you come to subject entirely in isolation. By the time we got to Emancipation, I was not isolated from Prince.

All it needs is a killer guitar solo, and it's up there with his greatest. Definitely a highlight of Emancipation, and instantly takes me back to the winter of 96/97

No. It sounds good though.

like the version performed at the North Sea Jazz festival last summer? That ends with a killer guitar solo

I can't get enough of that solo! It takes me places, and gives some geniune bumps all over me. I just wish he made it even longer! Haha It's Button Therapy, Baby!

i think its really pretty rude [Edited 1/8/12 9:22am] Bogey and Bacall, peanut butter and jelly, Wall being on fucking point, is "classic" dipshit. An iphone is top shelf technology. Get it straight. This thing is 4g. -Wall the great

i can totally see why people would class this as one of his greatest song.
do we know for fact it is about(amongst other things) jonathan melvoin or have we summised that from received wisdom??
i know its dedicated to an "old friend' but has anyone ever said "that song is about jonathan"??

One of Prince's absolute best. Notice how effective his spiritual songs were before he rededicated himself to the JW's. He couldn't create a song with lyrics this well-written to save his life now.

Prince never said who it was about. I was just looking at his old website (l41a), and in a Q&A, someone asked where the inspiration came from, and if it was true that it was about Jonathan Melvolin, and he just said it was about a 'friend lost to drugs'.

I've read the lyrics to it before but this is another one of those tracks I've never actually heard. 비

Do you not have the album [Emancipation]? If not, you should get it. I own three copies, and each one was bought for less than $5.
As good as the lyrics are, it's the singing and music that makes the song great and uplifting.
