1999

from the album 1999

single art for 1999

1999 is the first track on Prince's fifth album 1999, and, one month prior to the album's release, 1999 was released as the album's first single. The song has been released around the world many times in Prince's career. In 1993, the track was included as the ninth track on Prince's first compilation album The Hits 1 (also included as the first disc of The Hits / The B-Sides). In late 1998, the 1999 single was reissued, including the full version of the track. In 2001, the track was included as the second track on the compilation album The Very Best Of Prince. In 2006, the track was included as the fourth track on the first disc of the compilation album Ultimate. In 1999, a re-recording of the track, as well as several remixes, were released by Prince on the 1999: The New Master single, credited to "Prince and the Revolution".

Initial tracking for 1999 took place at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA, on 7 August, 1982 (on the same day as Mia Bocca and Little Red Corvette), as the final track recorded for the album.Prince re-recorded the song in late-1998 for release as 1999: The New Master. Prince claimed at the time that his entire Warner Bros. catalogue had been re-recorded and would be released as "new masters" - it is unknown how close these came to release, however.

They ask politely that you do this at the top of their main page.

Nice info! Furthermore, regarding the lyrics, where was he at and what was he doing when he thought of these lyrics?... Prince, "Man I was at the breakfast table eating a bowl of my Captain Crunch when I thought of these Judgment Day type of lyrics"! etc. etc. lol

U left even more mind boggling info out of that......

"He was in a rehearsal with the Time for 5 or 6 hours, after that Prince went to rehearse with his own band for 5 or 6 more hours. Then went to his studio & the next day Prince played the song 1999 to "The Time". They were like when did U have time to do that?

Prince work ethic was unmatched by any other artist & still is to this day...

Prince had the same fascination with the world ending at a certain date or year. I'm thinking he must've been taught at church that Armageddon was approaching so he decided to make the song (and the album itself) as a concept album of sorts to live your life until the world ends and that's what came out of it. Again, only Prince knows but I know this is when he started, along with Controversy, to delve into the end of the world prophecies.

Transcript from Larry King Live interview in 1999

KING: Tell me the origin of that. How -- what were you thinking in 1980 -- what was it -- '2?

THE ARTIST: 1982 I wrote that. We were sitting around watching a special about "1999," and a lot of people were talking about the year and speculating on what was going to happen. And I just found it real ironic how everyone that was around me whom I thought to be very optimistic people were dreading those days, and I always knew I'd be cool. I never felt like this was going to be a rough time for me. I knew that there were going to be rough times for the Earth because of this system is based in entropy, and it's pretty much headed in a certain direction. So I just wanted to write something that gave hope, and what I find is people listen to it. And no matter where we are in the world, I always get the same type of response from them.

KING: Dick Clark just rated it one of the 10 greatest songs of the millennium.

THE ARTIST: Oh.

KING: Great records of the millennium. Did you have any idea it would be as, one, prophetic as it was and as successful as it was?

THE ARTIST: Not to sound arrogant, but there was a point during rehearsal, we were working on it, and the song was going to be sung in a three-part harmony like Sly and The Family Stone's song, and I -- we all got together, and we started singing it and it wasn't really working, so what we did is I said, all right, you sing your harmony for the first part, then you sing your harmony for the second part, and I'll sing my harmony for the third. And it broke. When that breakup happened like that and everybody got their part separated, then I knew we had something real special.

KING: Are you surprised at how long it has been around?

THE ARTIST: Well, I've been around for a while, so.

Ah, that's accurate. I remember before 2000 actually hit playing 1999 until the clock struck midnight. lol And all of those people predicting doom were left with egg on their face that they had to wake up and still live in the world disappointed that Jesus wasn't coming back. lol
