What if Prince had retired in 1993 after all?

Remember when Prince said he was retiring in 1993? Instead of changing his name and continuing to record, what if he had retired altogether. How would he be remembered?

If Prince had retired in 1993, his legacy would be untarnished and he'd be remembered for quality, not quantity. That is my only argument as a fan -- too MUCH sub-par music.

The things that soured Prince to the public have all been post-1993 -- the name change to prince, the record-label battle, the "slave" fiasco, AND the sub-par releases (C&D, Rave, Come, etc).

If he had retired in 1993, he'd leave behind 14 albums -- WAY more than most artists put out in a lifetime. And, more to the point, the music he'd leave behind would be respected and admired. Think about it: Hendrix really only had 4 or 5 albums, Led Zeppelin only had 9 or 10 (?) albums -- but their legacies are established.

But to be honest, I'd miss the last 10 years - the ups-and-downs, the WB battle, the NPGMC. I hardly compare this last decade to the 80's, but there are dozens of excellent songs in there.

but what if he had retired in '85 when he said that he was going to look for the ladder?
do u think he would have reached the top of it by now?
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

As I recall, the "retirement" was just from studio recording... Prince said he wanted to explore other forms of expressing his art, such as film. He may have had the Interactive CD-ROM in mind when he announced the "retirement."

At that time i didnt care as i hated everything he had done since 1989. To be honest i thought he was washed up then he releases Come and The Gold Experience and restored my faith.
