Prince is much better without horns.

hope not. they have their place, but when he's got them around, they're way overused.

Can you please look up the definition of the Minneapolis sound? Please notice the horns mention. Please do notice the mention of that Prince name near the top of the page.
So please mention yourself that the synths are way overused. Repeat that a few times. Then find out that you think that sounds stupid.
Then think of a slightly fresh addition like horns (multiple) and these with their specific quality. Did you ever listen to their own CD's more than once? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

sorry, what is your point? Prince is known for the Minneapolis sound, yes, which is based on synths largely.
which I prefer in Prince's music. when he deploys horns any time on stage in the last decade, it's either way too cheesy or schmaltzy and makes him sound like he's playing some cliched Vegas revue. one or two horn players on stage would be fine. but when he brings an entire horn section and an army of background singers, I generally prefer not to listen. Prince moved us past horn-based funk, and while it's got its place in his reportoire, it's a big step backward for his music.

Isn't he a Vegas revue ever since 2003? Busy doin' something close to nothing

You can't read I must assume.

Whenever the horns kick in, I swear I expect to see Kenny G. and Clarence Clemons walk out on stage ala some crazy ass weekend-at-Bernies type of spectacle.
The horns are overused.
I hate them. | |

Prince and horns can go very, very wrong.
Those Leeds and NPG years where he yelled 'Horn!" every song and did goofy stage gimickery while they launched into extended reworkings was really boring and formulaic. Then there were the Adult Contemporary solos during balads. No thanks.
I did like the horns in Parade and the synth horns here and there.
I'd guess the photo is from an Andy Allo recording session rather than Prince's.

I changed my mind. With Prince, they are indeed overused. Nontheless, I like my portion of horns with funk. But they should just stick with the rhythm work and an occasional solo, not 5 mins of soloing during every song. [Edited 1/5/12 2:31am]

I think that horns can be good in his music but I have not enjoyed the players he has used since he stopped working with the Hornheadz. Sure, Maceo is a legend but I just do not think that he meshes will with Prince. I'm not sure exactly what I dislike about his recent horn sections but they seem too clean sounding and a bit of a distraction.
If he is going to return to having a live horn section I would like to see him make some big changes and work with different people.

Every instrument has it's place and good for use at it's proper time. Perhaps now it's time to pull out the horns. Candy, where you at?

Candy won't be there due to some issues between them. (anybody can confirm?) Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

They need to listen to 1980's Prince music and learn to duplicate those sounds via the horns instead of bring their own sound, which always will mess up Purple Music
Eric Leeds Eddie M & Atlanta Bliss + Claire Fischer totally set the foundation

One can only hope they're recording an updated version of "Work that Fat"....... with horns!

This is like saying that using a drum set is backwards. Or that we have to make a new kind of dub step with eletronic violins side chain compressed to the high freequency of an autotuned electronic standing bass.... drown this in massive digital noize and put some 808 high hats on top. Otherwise, it will sound like a gigantic step backwards in music actually it's quite possible to make something sound new with authentic classic sounding instruments. It's the way it's used that makes it sound old imo. Sound engineering, arrangement, song writing, instrument techniques, composing... it all together can make a song sound old, or new. Well all that is certainly true but it does not apply to Prince's use of horns in the last 15 years. Nothing new at all. He's regressed. He's become entirely too dependent at times on the horn section without actually doing anyhing interesting with them. But I suppose that's what you get when you're working with the likes of Najee, Candy Dulfer and Maceo Parker instead of people who can work within the framework of your music and complement it.

Funny you mention it. NPG drums are almost as gruesome as the horn sections.
It's not the instruments it's the instrumentation. It sounds like session playing. There's no soul or modesty.
I'd rather have a drum machine, and synth horns over that.

I also think that sometimes the Horns don't go in every song. In the 90's they were used kind of too much. BUT I love the horns! I mean "I Can Never Take The Place Of Your Man' The horns are used perfectly! Also the song 'NewPower Soul' DAMN! SO GOOD! It's Button Therapy, Baby!
