How much is a Prince Album on Vinyl worth? Something like 1999 or The Black Album on Vinyl...hee hee?
And when did the record companies stop making vinyl albums? | |

Not a lot.
Vinyl is totally back, and from almost all new albums there is a CD and a vinyl. | |

But then again I suppose it depends who wants them; like a Prince fanatic or collector of vinyl albums... | |

Obviously, still-sealed and/or unplayed vinyl will be more sought-after and worth more than those used bin regulars that sell for a buck or two. Many of us still have our vinyl collections from back in the day, but those are probably all very played.
Go here and convert to your currency as needed for approximate value: http://sleevographia2.free.fr/
The rare exceptions bring top dollar, as they should. The collectors here can be more specific.
Vinyl manufacturing petered out because no one wanted them anymore. Cassettes and then CD killed the format. Vinyl is back as a nostalgia act, but that's about it. They're expensive to make because there are only a few plants left with the specialized equipment.
They do sound better, especially in the case of Prince's 80s stuff. I don't think anyone would argue that. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot. | |

i want a 12" boulvard promo of just as long as we'er together! "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" | |

It depends. Rare pressings, picture discs, unopened and mint condition copies are always valuable
an official vinyl copy of The Black Album is worth a piece of change. I've seen it go for $50 and up
Purple Rain or 1999...not so much, every record store I've gone to has copies of Purple Rain. I'm talking STACKS. "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world." | |

All used, although I saw one in really good condition with the original wrapping plastic intact. They were all between $1.99-3.99
Back in August, I bought my copy of Sign o' The Times with the original wrapping plastic and price tag "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world." | |

Some of them with the inner sleeves and extras intact and in good condition could be worth something. Controversy with the poster inside comes to mind. When ![]() ![]() ![]() | |

So was MPLSound..

The double Lotus vinyl is a claimed limited edition of 2000 worldwide. Copies are still easily found on ebay though these seem a bit pricey http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch...6.c0.m1538
I think my copies were £25 each and MPLSound cost me £20.

The albums released after the CD format became dominant (from Diamonds and Pearls onward) are worth more on vinyl than the earlier albums. Of the earlier albums, Controversy seems to be the hardest to find in a mint condition original pressing, but it doesn't really matter because the recent Rhino reissue sounds better anyway.
Beware of sealed vinyl. Just because nobody's opened it doesn't mean the record and inner sleeve are in perfect condition. In fact, if nobody has opened the record in twenty or thirty years, the most likely reason is that it's been sitting unnoticed in a box and no one has taken care of it. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach. | |

Purple Rain or 1999...not so much, every record store I've gone to has copies of Purple Rain. I'm talking STACKS. Saw in my record store they have two vinyl copies of the black album one had actual designs and stuff on it!!!!! It's not blank it's some limited edition Japanese press or something it's 25$ definitely stealing that one they also have a regular black album with nothing, but wow that one is incredible! ![]() | |

WTF?
Of course I was referring to the 1994 reissue [Edited 1/3/12 21:14pm] "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world." | |

Your random cat number wx147 does not relate to the rarest copy of the black album at all. See cat numbers here http://www.theblackalbum.info/
And before telling people to their homework before posting, maybe you should do yours. [Edited 1/4/12 2:42am] [Edited 1/4/12 2:46am] | |

All accurate Black Album info can be found here http://www.theblackalbum.info/, that Jap version with designs on it sounds like a bootleg.

"The Rainbow Children" on Vinyl is surely worth a lot. I'm still searching for it -----------------------------------------

It is, it was limited to 1,000 copies. I have watched copies sell on ebay for anything from £100 to over £300 for a sealed copy.

That site rocks, never knew it existed, fantastic and fascinating stuff. Seems all my Kiwi and Aussie pressings of 80s Prince classics are quite rare, and are amazed by the fact, some of the Latin American pressings had one Prince song on one side and a song by someone else on the other!!! One record had kiss and a Van Halen song on the other side!!!! Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name | |

I bought:
Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999
--- when these were re-released on heavy weight vinyl LPs last year.
I also bought Purple Rain vinyl from a few years back, released in 2009 iirc.
I love vinyls too. Prince 4Ever. ![]() | |

I'm not sure if this is relevant to the conversation, but does anybody know 100% for sure whether the Musicology and 3121 vinyls are legitimate? I've heard yes and no on this site, but I can't seem to find any trustworthy information on them.
I checked this site ( http://sleevographia2.free.fr/ ), and it says there are legitimate promos, but I heard from many people on this site that they were all fake. [Edited 1/4/12 4:52am] | |

According to those in the know http://prince.org/msg/7/299606 , Musicology officially exists on vinyl, but 3121 and Planet Earth are fakes. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot. | |
