I Hate U: Bass Guitar and Drums

Hey everyone,

Happy New Year to all of you with the impending beginning of a new year!

I was just listening to I Hate U while playing my bass guitar.

Anyhow, Sonny T and Michael B are on fire on that song - Sonny's bass playing was incredible and made so many songs just pop some more.

Hope Mr. Thompson is doing well... one bad dude on the bass.

Here's me showing the man some love!

What do you think about the playing of this song by his other bass players like Rhonda and Josh?

Hey Banishone,

I haven't heard Rhonda or Josh play the song...

Rhonda certainly brought a different style of playing to some of Prince's music (The One being a really great example or the bass solo from Dreamin About U) but Josh seemed to play the bass like every other bass player plays the instrument.

I did enjoy listening to Cora's fills on Prince's music in the live setting though.

I alwazs thought it was Prince on the bass.

Sonnz plazs with the strings upside down cuy he|s left handed.

Although Sonnz is a great instumentalist, I can|t phathom him pullin| |n| slappin| the strings like on the recording.

BTW... back in |96, i remember plazin| along, too. That|s when i thought...

Prost Neues!

That isn't Prince - it's Sonny.

Prince doesn't play bass the way Sonny plays it.

My keyboard is set on german standards. Sorry for that!

I could be wrong, but i think prince played bass on the whole album.

Sonny played an upside-down bass. He had seemed to learn it that way.

Prost!

No way dude...

My favourite version is the The Beautiful Experience version - I remember back in 1994 the urban radio station out of Buffalo, New York used to play this version on radio! It was awesome!

The Beautiful Experience version is super soulful - Prince's vocals are nuts, Sonny's bass playing is nasty, Michael Bland hammers, and the guitar solos are fantastic. The studio overdubs take away some of the punch of the guitar from the actual live performance but whatever.

Gotcha...

As far as the bass playing is concerned, the NPG played on a lot of the material from that record and Come.

Sonny has a pretty fat bass style - he plays a lot of fills and his bass lines are pretty jumpy. He's incredible - I hate U is an example of his amazing bass playing.

I Hate U is also an example of the strength of Michael B and Sonny's rhythm section. What a great time!

Unfortunately yes...

In my opinion, The Gold Experience version is cold... it sounds too metalic and too clean.
