It's not so bad that Prince has his own beliefs. We all do. This is my opinion of the matter: I was drawn to Prince because I was an outcast. I was the one who was different because I didn't judge people by race or sexual orientation as my family had. I wasn't the pretty popular one either. Here along comes this man who didn't give a fuck about what people thought of him. The way he dressed, the way he looked, the way he talked, none of it. I felt I was no longer alone in the universe. When I found other Prince fans, I found kindred spirits. Prince really didn't seem to conform or follow anyone. He just did he own thing. Now, my perception of him is that he is a follower and that he looks down on those who aren't like him. He doesn't curse anymore. He doesn't do a lot of things anymore, but now he doesn't want anyone else to do it either. I just miss the old Prince. The one that was cool. My twocents

seems to me he hasn't really changed at all...he still doesn't give a fuck what you or anyone else thinks of him or his beliefs right?

nope. only that YOU think what he thinks and follow his beliefs.

he still doesn't conform or follow "anyone" (he follows god but that ain't just anyone)

and Larry.

he still does "his own thing" it's just that some don't agree with his thing so they suddenly wish he would change who he is. You miss the old prince...the one that was cool? yeah cause being "cool" is all that matters in life I suppose...LOL smile

no... cool ... to me... is more about making good music. i wish he would go back to being cool biggrin

It's obvious to me that he does care what people think about his beliefs or he wouldn't keep telling us about it at every chance he got. I agree that he doesn't give a fuck about his fans. I disagree that he isn't following anyone. JWs are regular mortals like the rest of us. No, being cool is not all that matters in life...treating people with the respect you want them to treat you with counts, too. I don't disagree with what his new path is. Good for him if that what he wants to do, and believe me I don't ridicule his religious beliefs.

So what? Buy it, or don't buy it! Prince does his thing, you either enjoy his art for what it is and take his religious bullshit with a pinch of salt, or else you keep your money and buy something that doesn't offend you so much. It's not complicated.

If Prince released something that I really objected to, I certainly wouldn't buy it. But nothing on TRC or ONA Live has made me as angry and some of you people seem to be. Perhaps you need to get your priorities in life straightened out a bit. This is just pop music guys, it's all bullshit.
BUT IAN!!! What if you don't know up front what the album is gonna be about? As for me, I don't listen to music critics, I don't download or buy bootlegs, so how would I know? Ian jumping all over someone for their beliefs!lol

Well stymie, you have access to reviews of the album on Prince.org to give you some idea of the content smile Also, most record stores will allow you bring purchases back if you aren't happy with it. Or... you could get stung once and just stop buying future albums from the same artist smile

In relation to this topic, I think that people are divided into 2 main camps:

1-Those who listen to music because they like the sound of it
2-Those who listen to music because they like the sound and the words.

To characterize those of us who express our disatisfaction as being insecure in our beliefs is missing the point completely. I listen to music not only for the way it sounds but because of what it has to say. This is why I take this subject to heart. It wasn't or isn't Prince's beliefs that I piggy back onto and form any of my beliefs from, it's the music that I believe in. Prince's music had so much magic and the music helped me to believe the best about myself. For Prince to turn his back on that is really sad.

Let me try to deal with your post. First off, I think that Prince did not care what people thought in the past and now he does.Did you or do you not say in a previous post that Prince doesn't care what people think? People..that would include his fans, too, right? Next, respect is not ridiculing people sitting in the first few rows in a concert, or separating the non-believers from the believers at the Celebration. Lastly, I do not disagree with his new path, whether you choose to believe it or not. I keep saying that if that's what makes Prince happy then so be it.

I don't know exactly Aaron, but I'm not going to put my own spin on it and then blame prince for it! LOL I think you take every thing he says WAY too literally! You could ask the same question of the whole "god is love love is god" statements he used to say. what if someone disagreed with that back in the day?...should they have thought he was saying they "should" believe that cause he believes that? NO, so why is this any different?

that's not the point. you said he doesn't follow anyone but god. he obviously follows larry.

again, aaron, I think you need to step back a little and not take everything the man has ever said as gospel

no..I didn't say that! I was quoting stymie. but anyway, 90% huh? where'd you come up with that figure? pull it outta yer hat? smile I could say I think 90% of people think Prince still does make great music...so...where were we going again?

rainy

I went to the ONA concert in Copenhagen last october. During "The Ladder" Prince starts talking about The Bible and his beliefs. He starts with saying "I don`t say you have to do this, but if you are alone and need something to trust in, then one day just open the bible and try to read a little of it".

So I don`t think Prince is looking down on those who don`t believe what he does. I think he is just sharing his beliefs with us and want us to see a different and new way that had helped him, and maybe could help others.

Bye

I wish someone would respond to this point...

I would Supa, but you keep being so aggressively gay! biggrin

I'm not sure anyone really takes Prince's music in isolation... I dig the music first and foremost... and of course I do like some of his lyrics too, but if I don't agree with them it doesn't upset me or anything.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that ALL people who are unhappy with the religious content in Prince's lyrics are insecure in their own beliefs - not at all. I was rather offering that in response to some rather vitriolic points made by "pimpytheclown".

I honestly don't think Prince has turned his back on anything really... the magic is still there for me. I loved TRC, and the lyrics didn't offend me at all. Frankly, I liked the fact that Prince's was stretching himself a bit lyrically and musically, and TRC was very welcome after the crapola that was Rave. His religious BS has always been present in his music, and it has never bothered me one bit despite being non-religious myself.

JAN SAID: If Prince released something that I really objected to, I certainly wouldn't buy it. But nothing on TRC or ONA Live has made me as angry as some of you people seem to be. Perhaps you need to get your priorities in life straightened out a bit. This is just pop music guys, it's all bullshit.

In actuality TRC didn't bother that much. I really love the album. Here is my initial post in October 2000 when it was released durning the first year of NPGMC:

As one of the most vocal Org members regarding Prince's personal choices and how they have been affected by his religious endeavors, I thought it was important to post my
review/opinion of The Rainbow Children.

First off, WOW!!! I am totally blown away by this album. I have about a bazillion thoughts and comments but first let me give my review:

Organgrinder is cutting his review for brevity's sake

This album is truly AMAZING!!! Whoever said that this album demonstrates that Prince does not need outside help with the production couldn't be more correct. The production on this album is simply flawless. It's complex but not confusing. Very clean, not polished…..just clean. This is the most free Prince has sounded in years. The "live" vibe of the album is remarkable. I hope that Prince does put on a well-produced tour for this album. The possibilities are endless regarding how killer a tour this album would make.

This album is full of so many surprises. Each song fails to prepare you for the next experience. For example "The Work" into "Everywhere" or "Mellow" into 1+1+1=3. It really
sets a contrast that is remarkable. I haven't been this surprised by Prince in years.

John Blackwell's inclusion in the band is the smartest thing that Prince could have done for his music. A great drummer is the backbone to any band. I'm so damn happy this man is in the band. He has many great moments.

Some have been bothered by the slowed down voice, but I kind of see the voice as the voice of a spirit. Filtered so that we are able to hear from it without going mad or crazy. I love albums that tell a story and that is just what the slowed down voice does, narrates.

This album needs to be tracked. Not because it's not good enough to listen to all the way through but because you are definitely gonna need your fix of certain songs.

I understand and hear the comparisons to James Brown, Sly Stone and Santana. However NOTHING they've ever done touches this album. I know, Apples & Oranges. So don't
compare Prince to these other artists when it's clear that he stands alone in his own category. He may be "influenced" by these artists but he's created something that stands on
it's own.

I have said many times on the Org that the first Prince album in 7 years (since Come) should kick ass and you know what? IT DOES! I've heard a few folks that really don't dig the album or only like a couple songs and I can't understand HOW that is possible. Different strokes for different folx I guess. However, there is no denying how wonderfully crafted this album is. It is so fresh and so alive. As a fan of many types of music genres, this album
totally satisfies my hunger for intense and creative musical experiences.

I admit, I was concerned about the lyrical content. My fear was that Prince would come off as pious-holier-than-thou-I-am-right-and-you-are-wrong. There really isn't much concern
with regards to the lyrics. The album tells a story. If you look at it from that vantagepoint, the few references spawned by his current beliefs don't really matter.

The biggest mistake that anyone can make is to embrace his or her philosophical differences in regards to Prince and his beliefs and reject a purely magical journey that most
of us have been waiting years to take. This album has my full support.

I still stick by this smile

and in another thread I posted this

People are getting way too caught up in the lyrics. I approach TRC as a story. I’m rather fascinated with musicians interpretations of the story of Adam & Eve. I see this album as another variation of that story. We all know that there is no factual “Rainbow Children” so everything that happens to them and everything they become, whether it be banished or the discovery of feeling God “Everywhere” is happening in the mind of the artist and in the story itself. As such I feel free to take from it what I need and leave the rest that doesn’t apply to me or my beliefs. As I said before, there are so many positive messages in this album that most of us can embrace regardless of designated “belief”

Some people look at 1+1+1=3 as an egotistical sexist song. People interpret the song to be that the woman needs to accept God in order to be with him. “Aint no room to disagree 1(Prince)+1(Woman)+1(God) is 3. I love this song because I have a different interpretation….

“There’s a Theocratic Order”—Order, as in edict or command from God. Not as in Woman submits to man. From the very moment I met my boyfriend, the spiritual connection was incredibly alive. Neither my boyfriend or I are very “religious” but we do agree that the spiritual nature of man is very important to nourish. So for me, the “Theocratic Order” is in fact an unspoken law, so to speak, that God would be alive in our relationship and that if we are going to be together, there is no room to disagree about that "order". Chances are that things wouldn’t work between my boyfriend and I if either one of us were not willing to follow in the direction of spiritual union.

So you see, I'm more against Prince's actions (changing old songs and preaching at concerts) than I am against most of his music.

Ah I see... yeah that makes sense. Changing old songs is definitely irritating, and preaching at concerts can make the atmosphere somewhat "uncomfortable".

Supa, i kinda said that same thing in another one of my posts. I listened to TRC all the time when it was sent to us as a download. When the album came out and I bought it, I was turned off by some of the words when I read it. My opinion.

Shorty said: "ugh! I can see us going round and round and round here but..what the hell!
I agree that Prince did not care (in the past) what people thought of his beliefs/actions/clothing..whatever!
but I disagree with you in that you think he now does care what people think of his beliefs/actions/clothing...whatever!
I feel he still doensn't care what others think of him and his beliefs! that doesn't not mean he doesn't care about his fans! You can't see a difference between careing about people vs caring about their opinions of you? I can.
please enlighten me on this so called "ridiculing" he's supposedly done. an ahh...are you on crack!! I was at the celebration..the whole time...and NEVER did I see any seperation of believers and non-believers! so..please explain that one too."
1. If I care about someone, I care about what their opinions of me are.
2. Changing the names of people in the audience, putting them on the spot, and then singing a song about the fact they can be mad all they want but at least they still have their 'family name' is ridiculing them in my opinion. Making statements to people about them not belonging to the club was not nice.
3. The Celebration that I speak of is the 2001 listening party for TRC.
In an earlier post, you say that I disrespected Prince. When you get back on Monday, please explain that one to me. And also explain how you feel Prince respects me.

SWANG

I just enjoy the man's music, new and old. I love TRC album. But I'm not concerned with the message, just the passion behind it and obviously, incredible musicianship and songwriting.

I don't care what God my sister worships, let alone what God some man I've never met worships. I do what I want. What Prince doesn't know won't hurt him.

Prince has not converted me. He didn't make me have sex with my sister either, so what's the difference?

I just thought that last part what strangely appropriate. lol
