Gold instead of Purple Rain live. Not sure if this should go in the Concerts Forum. But hey, i'm sort of new here. Next time Prince tours i think it would be a proper treat if instead of playing Purple Rain he played us Gold in full glory anthem mode. Not the way he did this year. Obviously the human body and mind couldn't take both in one night, well maybe us orgers could, but i'd prefer Gold for a change. Are you with me?................
The Sampler Set is great!

Cosign, I would LOVE to hear Gold. At this time in life and his current persona on stage, he would KILL it. I pray for the moment as well Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Now this is how you post when you are new!!

nah. much as I love Gold and would like to see him do it live, I'd be disappointed with no Purple Rain. and so would the other thousands concert goers.

Recently purchased the Gold album, Love it!!!! Gold would be incredible live. I always think surely Prince has got to be sooooo bored with singing Purple rain (and before someone jumps down my throat, yes, Purple rain is great) Got to be refreshing for a change.

I'd like him to do "Gold" too, and even though it wasn't a big hit (in the US), I think it would go over well. But I still want him to do "Purple Rain". I can handle both in one night, but if he'd only do one, PR is the better song, but "Gold" would be a nice change..

He did both in Toronto. Excellent. I couldn't believe it... And both near the beginning. He opened with Gold and Purple Rain was third, I believe. Amazing. Both songs were true to the recording, no sax or alterations and... I could hardly breathe. His guitar was awesome that night, and the sound was just right. I was not expecting to be even more impressed (this being my 10th time seeing him starting in 1988), but I was. He manages to perform to his strengths, so as much as he has aged, he has also grown. One of a kind.

I'd love for him to do that. He kinda did it the first day of the NPG festival. Went nuts when he started with Gold. But I missed the guitar. Though it was still nice to hear it live.

The full original version would be a good final song for a show, indeed. He usually performs Purple Rain mid show now so there is no reason why he wouldn't be able to play both. Talking about closing songs, what about Anna Stesia? Loved it when he performed it quite regularly during The One Nite Alone tour. Or a long version of "The Ladder". But to get back to the oroginal post, I think there are other concert constants that are in more need of being ditched in favor of something else. Stuff I'd like to hear more often (again) And God Created Woman Lady Cab Driver Something In The Water Willing & Able Elephants & Flowers Thieves In The Temple Positivity The Ballad of Dorothy Parker Calhoun Square Crucial Computer Blue Space (acoustic) Endorphinmachine In This Bed I Scream A Million Days Boom Condition of the Heart (full piano version) In Love Supercute Northside I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man The Dance Electric Love...Thy Will B Done (guitar 95 version) Get Wild Big Fun 3121 Money Don't Matter 2Nite The Word Fury Dreamer One Nite Alone Vavoom Etc etc. Indeed, so many songs to choose from. Wish he would take out some of the overplayed songs on a new tour and focus more on album material or less succesful singles etc. And an ounce of actual 'new' material. Thunder and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

If I were Prince, I'd be sick to death of performing Purple Rain, but I'd KNOW I HAD to do it.
But yea, whoever said it, start with Gold and end with Purple Rain. "I never want to stop singing this song!" Prince in Montreal, 12/2/11, just before performing Purple Rain

I know what that's like. My chorus teacher asks me to perform Purple Rain a lot and it bores the shit out of me because I've done it too many times. I still love the song though.
I don't think I'll ever get bored of Gold. That's one of my favorites.

Sure, I'd love to hear Gold.

But is Chubby Checker tired of singing The Twist and Mick Jagger of Satisfaction? You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Seeing them back to back was pretty sweet tho 12/05/2011
P*$$y so bad, if u throw it into da air, it would turn into sunshine!!!

I myself would say so. But, just like Purple Rain, they know they have to.
(Personally, I like (You Can't Always Get) What You Want better, but I do know that Satisfaction is the Stones signature song.)

I would prefer that Prince just stop playing that ridiculous extended version of Purple Rain, with chanting and Shelby waving a flag, and work in BOTH songs.

WELL SAID! I totally agree and would be great for a change.
PLUS everyone already knows Purple Rain so it would be a good chance for him to show off another song Shut up already, damn.

NOW THERE IS A GREAT SETLIST!!
and as 4 the question at hand ..GIVE ME GOLD OVER PURPLE RAIN ANYDAY ..so tired of hearing purple rain i use it as my bathroom break song or going out 4 a smoke song man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I think people who take bathroom breaks during concerts are party poopers. No pun intended. Same to those who sit during concerts. How the fuck are you supposed to see?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Sure was!
Opening the show with Gold and then Purple Rain one after the other blew my mind. Like the Now Magazine reviewer said, "Only he could open up the night with a giant hit – Purple Rain – and not have to worry about running out of them, or of energy, for the next two and a half hours".

sometimes u sit during concerts if ur a certain height 2 be curteous 2 those around u so since i'm a "party pooper" what is your word 4 those that have left when he's done purple rain?
this should be good man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

but he opened up with Gold not purple rain. further proof the press doesn't know his music man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

this should be good I would say they're missing out... ...and they're all party poopers. But hey, there are worse things I could say.

Prince is not about songs that people dont know anymore. I saw him play Gold recently and was it ever uninspired. He did not even play the solo and I HATED it!! He seemed much more excited about Purple Rain as he got a reaction from the crowd. Prince should just keep playing his 10-12 hits that people know and call it a day. He does not have the fan base to play other stuff. Maybe a gem here and there but he would drop like a brick(as if he has not already) if he tried to pull off another tour playing newer stuff. Purple Rain gets my vote(even though I cringe hearing it now but its good for business)

That second Toronto show saw him open with Gold and then go into Purple Rain.
The lighting, the sounds of the band, and the song alone gave me chills as 1994-1995 era Prince was one of my favourite versions of Prince!
He just seemed to be on a mission to release as much quality music as he could - The Exodus, The Gold Experience, Come, and all of the maxi singles!
Michael Bland and I chatted a couple of weeks ago and he said that Prince was super intense back then and was absolutely on a mission to create quality music.
Anyhow, hearing Gold was awesome... he played it again in London, ON. It was awesome!!!

True, but the sentiment is nice, just the same. I was shocked that a 'hipster' weekly like Now even included Prince in their Top 10 concerts of the year.

So in Rotterdam he opened with Gold. Then did Purple Rain. That is an anticlimax. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.
