as others have said, the Tele has a bit of a twang - and yes, the hohner version does as well. This is popular in country music, but also works well in funk - espcially chunky rythm like in Controversy. I read that Prince was really pulled to the bite the hohner had (look at how close the bridge pickup is to the bridge). The Tele really fits Prince early style - lots of rythm, funky grooves.
Strats are more bell-like, singing, almost vocal. Fender orignialy designed them as an upgrade to the Tele (just don't tell Tele fans that!). But they both sound great and have their place. Outside of Prince - my favorites play Strats - and that's the sound I am going for (Gilmour, Hendrix, John Frusciante, etc.) I read that Clapton switched to a Strat after seeing Hendrix play.
I'd say look at what your favorite musicans play and go in that direction - your ear will pull you.
I have a nice Strat now (as well as a Cloud and a Hohner Madcat remake) - but I am lusting after a Tele as well - it won't be long now..... I don't have religon over a guitar model - own them all!

Prince loves the Strat for soloing and the Floyd whammy bar, but I believe I never saw him using it for clean funk rhythm stuff (sometimes he plays with the distortion, using the volume knob to control the gain). On the other hand, I ve seen him playing Tele for both leads and rhythm.
He seems to be in love with both, but I bet he would choose the Tele if he had to choose only one.
Strats and Teles are different. Tele has a more ´twangy´ sound than Strat. On the other hand, Strats seem to be more versatile, because of the 3 pickups and tremolo bar. The best thing is to go to a store and try both. Both are great.

He definitely has a thing for his Hohner Tele.. He'd have to as he's used it pretty consistently since the beginning Strats now seem to be almost like replacement Cloud guitars? i mean the ones I've seen appear modified to be like a cloud anyway, with just single coil & a humbucker Pickup in them... whatever he picks up he plays like a mofo anyway But IMO prince holding a strat just looks wrong... Tele all the way.. It's totally his signature guitar.

I agree - I like the sound of a Strat and like playing one, but it looks wrong on him. I've never loved the shape of a Strat - I like the way a Les Paul and Tele look, more than a Strat.
The Hohner looks right on him. As do the custom shapes he has came up with over the years. A Strat looks too pedestrian for Prince. Although, I loved the Superbowl Strat - I think it was the color......

- Yeah, but when I think of Teles, I always think of guys like Springsteen. I still prefer to see Prince with the Cloud.
