In the movie trailer and commercial for the movie when it was aired on TV back in 1984. The trailer is on the 20th Anniversary DVD. Also, I think I saw Morris and Apollonia running through the yard in the "Jungle Love" music video. Just in various music videos from both Prince and The Time that contained scenes from the movie. I think in the trailer, there's also a clip of Apollonia on the inside of a barn standing in front of the barn door. Go back and look the trailer very closely and you'll see things that weren't in the movie. Andy is a four letter word.

Is this worth watching? I saw something that said it had 5 mins difference? Dunno if I want to sit through it just for that?!

The differences are minimal yes. I don't think it has the barn scene, been a long time since I watched it. For completists only really.

I have the 20th Anniversary DVD. This sounded familiar, but I wanted to check it out. Also, this DVD has the orginal music videos which, to my recollection, also have scenes deleted from the movie. (I remember the barn scenes in particular.) Am I wrong about the videos? "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

You're right about the videos. That's where I've seen the clips. There is very little Prince bootleg video in my area so the little bit that I've had, I've gotten from online friends. Y'all have seen much more bootleg than I have. Andy is a four letter word.

That's what I thought! I bought the anniversary DVD but I'm remembering the videos from decades ago because I haven't watched the special features yet! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Not to derail the thread, but the Under the Cherry Moon trailers also feature a few quick outtake shots.

The 20th anniversary DVD is great. I love the interviews. It's too bad they couldn''t get Prince, Morris, or BrownMark, but the interviews they did get were solid.
I think the movie holds up pretty well over the years. It's problems--weak acting especially Jill Jones (good singer, not so good actor) and misogyny (at different times it is both explored well and presented uncritically)--are the same now as they were then. So that hasn't really changed.
The performances are still off the chart amazing. That definitely holds up til this day. And the 80s-style dress is fun to see to remember how things were. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Jill Jones may not have had very many scenes in the movie--but you weren't moved when she had tears in her eyes? "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

I loved it in 1984....and with some perspective, I love it more in 2011.

The work-print tape has some shows in directors cut mode without the incidental music such as the "bar seduction " scene with Morris and Apples..no music just crowd-crew noise..and exteneded Lake Minnetonka scene "you were great last night".."I just got lucky" etc....it also shows Prince "terroroizing" Apollonia and Morris more than what was shown ..before he kicked Morris into the trash can etc...and the race between him and the train etc...mind you, the one I have is in crappy..crappy..quality. "Climb in my fur."

"Here is part of the original script with that scene, with Prince hitting Jellybean, after Morris sics him on him. "Climb in my fur."

yeah, that didn't quite get me all choked up.
and when she says "Apollooonia?" when Apples first says her name, it's a bit painful. still, it's all good. the movie is classic.

You MUST watch the special features, especially the 1984 "MTV Purple Rain Premiere Party Special". Well worth it to see Mark Goodman's interview with a (slightly?) deranged Little Richard, followed by Eddie Murphy's quick spoof of it in his own interview. [Edited 12/30/11 10:41am] Hey...

Someone mentioned Flashdance and Footloose.I think Purple Rain is in the same category as those films.....fun and exciting to watch when first released, but they didn't age very well. Those films are forever 'stuck' in 1983 and '84.Not that there's anything really wrong with that

You mean smacking a bitch because she wants to get her hustle on, despite her asking you for help first, has not dated well?
Under The Cherry Moon has aged better than Purple Rain.

There are certain kinds of movies that don't have a 'time stamp' and then there are others that have an 'historic' feel. the 2nd kind we can watch look into history and see what was happening in life and pop culture.
I think Purple Rain has aged very well. I represented a time period in a place that was part fiction part reality. Which also means it gives us a reflective mirror into Prince's life which it did partially.
Under the Cherry Moon is more of something without a 'time stamp'
Terminator 1, Breakfast Club, Purple Rain, Blade Runner are a few movies that feel and sound like the 1980's (time stamp) and that doesn't mean 'dated'
Same way Saturday Night Fever, Halloween 1 & 2, feel like the 1970's without feeling dated
We can look at those movies and see how people responded and pick up on 'innocence' fears newness what was happening during that time.
Same with the 1990's | |

I agree with a lot of the above post.
Purple Rain is a classic. Nothing more needs to be said about that.
UTCM is different. Black & White, the viewer not know in "time" it's set, how Christopher met his end, etc.
Graffiti Bridge is "awkward". The whole concept left much to be desired, imo.
But, we will continue to watch all of them, if for no other reason than viewing them is a guilty pleasure.

Purple Rain was released in 1984, so of course the it is bound to look dated but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. I grew up in the 80's so it makes me nostalgic watching it. It is the best film starring a pop/rock star imo. The music still sounds great today and it is easy to understand the story. It is in my top 10 films.

Damn, I love this movie and UTCM. I always watch them when I am in a bad mood to lighten me up. I wish I was around during that time...The 80's was such an awesome time!
If only time machines existed...
But yesh, awesome movie!

Maybe the 30th anniversary edition . . .
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Possibly... but they'd have to change the name of the film to 'The Original prDeluxe'.

I need to see those deleted scene's before I die, so they better release a deluxe version with these deleted scenes.

I disagree.
There are sentiments expressed in Purple Rain the movie that are specific to its time; these sentiments aren't what could be considered "timeless" because of this.
In fact, Purple Rain representing its era so well plays a part in its inability to date well: it's a 1980s movie with 1980s sensibilities and it's hard for me to relate to it now.
Timeless movies and those that age well have sensibilities that are mostly generationally pandemic within the society in which it was conceived.
In my opinion, that is! | |

Was this an Oscar worthy movie? No. Did it have an Oscar worthy soundtrack? Fuck yes. I think folks take this movie a little too seriously. Was the acting superior? Hell no, because there were real musicians in the movie that made up for the bad acting. In fact, I'm watching it right now on VH1 Classic. I still love the movie and will pull out the DVD when I feel like watching it. Now for it's counterparts..."Under the Cherry Moon" and "Graffiti Bridge"...well those movies just sucked pure royal ass. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I'm new here and I seem to be running against popular sentiment, so I hope you all won't go ugly on me, but I truly enjoyed Graffiti Bridge . . . Morris Day running Pandemonium, the capitol of hell in Paradise Lost. Still trying to figure out which of the Inferno's nine circles of hell was being depicted when he performed Shake.
