Purple Rain the Movie- Dayum this has NOT dated well!. Tried to watch it recently and besides the great live music clips the rest IMHO is just cringeworthy!, even Morris's shitck is awful. At the time it was truly a powerful statement of amazing music, originality, relevance and more than anything for me it had the 'black community' taking back Hollywood through having the lead character/s being in control rather like Eddy Murphy was doing at the time.
When I watch it now the acting makes me blush! [i know none were classically trained but..] Ah well, twas good at the time and thank the Lord for the 'menu' / fast forward options !!.

It's a very 80s movie. But, I don't think this harms it much.
I don't think the acting is agreat, nor do I think it's a great movie by any means. But for a musical, I do think it was the first of its kind.
Remember, prior to Purple Rain, Rock Musicals came in the form of camp Elvis movies, Kizz's strange amusement park movie, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Purple Rain was a different kind of movie.
I also like the fact that much of the story was untold in dialogue. The 'kid' is obviously haunted by his father and seeks to emulate him in his own way.
The scene after Father's Song, where Prince rips into Computer Blue is able to show his father's influence without any silly dialogue 'talking the story' to you. I hate it when the story has to needlessly be explained in stiff dialogue---like much of Graffiti Bridge (a tour de force of mediocrity).
Some others mentioned UTCM--I fail to see how anybody could see that as a good movie. It has however dated itself better than Purple Rain, for the mere fact that I can't tell what the hell time-period it's supposed to take place in.

That's a part of its charm as far as I'm concerned. It's just like old b&w movies; watching them takes you to a foregone time. Watching Purple Rain leaves you no doubt it's the 80's. And I can forgive the acting for the most part. The sparse dialogue and awkward timing kinda fed into the "Prince mystique" at the time. It's definitely one of my fav movies.

I agree. I love how it's so dated. I love the clothes and it's cheesy-ness. I thought he was a good actor during the suicide attempt scene. I watch it at least twice a month, but only at night!

I'll agree with the previous two posters. Its charm is that it is nostalgic--all the big hair, etc. Still I find it entertaining and better in content than alot of other mindless stuff on TV. "Its hard to be humble when you're as pretty as I am" ~ Muhammad Ali

I think it's shit, I always have. I understand how it's seen as a classic and an important boost for black cinema and all the yadayada, but apart from the scenes where Prince is on stage I think it's terrible. Bought it a while back on blu-ray and it looked great in HD, it's a spunky nostalgia trip, but as a movie....crap.

Oh please. The movie is a classic.
Go back and watch other movies of the era Flashdance, Footloose, etc. Purple Rain eats those movies for breakfast.

Wtf:
what did you expect for a rock movie...
it's not like Purple Rain pretends to be like the Godfather movie.
still it's a classic... those live concert scenes are the best Prince material ever........

I actually agree with that.
Thing about PR is, it's always been commented that the acting is passable at best, Morris and Jerome carry it in the non-music scenes, which themselves are the sizzling highlight of the movie.
Everything else is 80s-bejewelled fabulousness. Either you enjoy the charm of that, or you don't.

It has held up very well. I watched it again a few months ago and was surprised how good the story was, even besides the music. The acting is off sometimes but people said that when it was released. You are the one who hasn't aged well (your brain actually)...not Purple Rain.

I think skywalker was specifically comparing it to similar music-themed, famous soundtrack-heavy movies from the same time period.

Purple Rain is a timeless rock movie that takes you back to a way better decade. It is my favorite movie of all time because it is a great movie. The actors did well considering none of them were really good at it including Prince, but they pulled it off well. The music scenes alone make it the greatest rock movie ever made imo. it

Exactly. I can never get tired of it. I don't watch it as much as I used to, merely because I don't wanna get sick of it entirely. I treat it as a treat for myself and others I force to watch with me
Don't hate on the Purple Rock Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Dayum , come on this is just a classic.
The movie is just 80's.... BUT... it's still a classic and a great MUSIC movie. One of the best, if not the best.
I can't recall any other artist that made such a classic and big music movie than Prince.
