Let's be real... Do U think Prince is finally all washed up these days? Or has he been washed up 4 a while? Lol. I'm a young fan; Musicology got me hooked in 2004, when I was 12. & I actually like most of the new stuff. But what do y'all long-time fans think? In "S & M Groove", he said he has a gift & ain't about 2 lose it! But has he lost it? Or has it been gone?! Haha Opinions please!

i still enjoy the newer albums, perhaps not as much as the older material but i still listen to them so i'm not sure i'd say he's lost it. He might not be quite what he was but i still think there are a few killer tracks on each release apart from maybe 20ten. There arent as many great tracks as there used to be but there are still very good songs from the recent past. It's a comparative thing, i mean P might not be quite where he was in the eighties but how many of his peers are either...he's still miles ahead of the competition in my opinion and in that respect i am entirely satisfied Still collecting that vinyl

I wasn't alive back in the day, lol, so I can't compare his 70's, 80's or even 90's music to today's stuff. But I personally think he's been going pretty steady. I like all eras of his music, from 1976 to 2012. I think there have been some "peaks & valleys" ofcourse, but overall, He IS still ahead of everybody! We are all human afterall... But who else can go almost 40 years still writing their own music & lyrics?? Especially at the rate he writes! I can't imagine doing that for 36 or so years, however long it's been. Could Lady GaGa or Justin Beiber do that for 40 years? NO.

I would think that so long as his health allows him to, he will continue to write and write. Recording that material might be a different story but as shown he isnt afraid of letting others record his songs.
Personally, I very very rarely listen to anything (probably) after Gold to the present day. Musicology (the song) is probably the only exception. I regularly listen to older material purely as I think it is more interesting and much better than the more recent stuff which is just to formulaic.

I am a fan since batman and i still love his new albums. Not everything of course... Some old fans will say his new music sucks, but i think after a career of more than 30 years with a string of classic albums in the 80ies which are considered as milestones, you can always say this and that.... Some like you are a fan since musicology, some from 3121, some saw him on the super bowl... i think that means he still attracts new fans. His fan base is very diverse, so it will be very difficult to make an album everybody likes...
I just wish (but you can`t change Prince) he would release an album worlwide with the help of a major label again with videos, singles and some new live dvd:-)) and to have a hit single again!! [Edited 2/7/12 8:45am]

Prince hasn't lost it he's just not groundbreakingly relevant anymore he try's to hard to please us rainbow children going over old ground, when we'd be just as happy to listen to him play the guitar. He spoilt us at an early age when every album and look was so different from the one before....now we all crave that wow feeling which only tends to happen on individual tracks rather than albums...we live in hope that one day he will blow our mind just one more time...

he has had amazing longevity and i cant see gaga or bieber lasting 30yrs because they are very much visual artists heavily reliant on their look. Prince has always had 'the look' but his musicianship is what sets him apart. didnt prince have a spat with timberlake a few years ago. i remember timberlake saying some shit about prince not having a hit record for years as his comeback. what a weiner you can just imagine him going to his producer in a few years "please write me some songs because im not very popular anymore". anyway my point is that P is still miles ahead he hasnt lost it Still collecting that vinyl

There's a lot of posts lately similar to this!
It's probably a combination of things:
What's really cool is that Prince has given us lots of stylistcally diverse eras though we disagree strongly on when his "best" peroid was (or is).
I get the vibe that everyone on this post so far is a bit younger than I, but I gotta tell you it was really cool watching him evolve from pop/disco crooner, to punk/funk rude boy, to futuristic funk, to psychedelic soul and so on over the years. And regardless of what era you may hate, it doesn't keep you enjoying the era(s) you appreciate.
It reminds me of an interview I saw with John Lennon. The interviewer was lamenting that his new songs were so weird and wished that he'd go back to writing romantic pop songs. Basically he told her that an artist has to evolve and besides if you really like "She Loves You", then go home and listen to "She Loves You".
I have to remind myself to do the same with Prince now and again -- I think I'll cue up "Splash"...

I agree. We all change in our lives, so we should allow prince to do the same...as long as he still can surprise me and write music that touches me, i will listen to his music...

I wasn't having a dig at the OP either, just in general, I think we're all a bit antsy for something, eh?

I didn't say he lost it, I was asking Y'ALL if he lost it. lolol Especially the older fans that usually complain about the new stuff. Like 4 instance, I dig 20ten!
& about the releases/news... Well, Musicology & 3121 were released about 23 months apart, 2 years basically. So nobody freak out yet about a new release or news or whatever. We just got a track in November & all those great concerts Let grampa rest a while. Lol.
We're all spoiled anyway!

Depends on how you define washed up. Most of his peers (except for maybe Madonna and U2) no longer write hit songs and rely on their greatest hits, plus most of his peers still enjoy massive backing by big corporations, unlike Prince who is very independent these days. As far as live shows are concerned, he´s far from being washed up.....perfectly energetic, disciplined and amazingly youthful looking, he still plays long shows and is a master of his instruments. Most folks his age either look or sound horrible, or both. Prince doesn´t get much credit for his clean lifestyle, which is a shame because I think he is, in some ways, a very positive role model who has always pursued his dreams and ambitions, and who obviously has a lot of discipline. The creative aspect of his shows is lacking a bit , he leaves the stage to Shelby and his band way too often and for too long, to the point of his fans disliking Shelby and the band members, which is sad because they are all talented and nice folks but I must admit, I´m really fed up with them, too. Purely speaking as a Prince fan here, nothing against Shelby or the band, but it is getting a bit too much.
The thing with Prince is that he can always turn things around, change the band, his show and the setlist, as seen in 2001-2002. The celebration at Paisley Park made me realize not to ever give up on Prince because what I saw there after those horrible 1998 shows was amazing, and proof that the fire inside is still burning.
I think the problem with Prince, as far as his fans are concerned, is that he´s still got it in him but he makes bad decisions most of the time. Not businesswise but in the creativity department.
But I don´t care. Even though the last show I witnessed in Cologne was utterly horrible, I could still see moments of greatness in it ( but hey, I had more FUN at the Ice Cube show that summer ). I´m very happy that he´s still around, clean and healthy, playing long shows and all live, looking almost the same. And I hope I can still go to his shows when he´s a really old man playing nothing but slow piano stuff and guitar on stage. He´s Prince!
So, in my opinion, he´s not REALLY washed up. And there are always at least three or four real gems even on his worst albums, so no, not washed up but maybe a bit confused as far as his creative direction is concerned. Prince doesn´t seem to get Prince these days because he is too busy researching and covering other people´s music when he´s not kneedeep into conspiracy theories. i really don't think someone who can sell out 21 nights has really lost anything.
stop comparing him to 1986.
