Another Lonely Christmas - extended version

This song is rarely discussed on the org and the extended version is pure bliss.
I always disliked the edit and it ruined the song for me. Very fitting i always rediscover this gem at Xmas time.
I just can't believe all the things people say !

Yep, no need to listen to the edit if you have the extended version. There is an awesome live version on a boot from a Purple Rain show at the St Paul Civic Center on Dec 26, 1984. I think that was the only time it was played live. The guitar is way more up front than on vinyl.

smile This song is going to be my theme song for this Christmas, since I won't spend it with the love of y life, I will be playing it ALL DAY on Christmas. It's going to be sad, and lonely, but I know ultimately, she is the only one I care for! smile

I've always preferred the edit. I feel like the extended version kind of meanders off into a few unnecessary tangents lyrically and melodically, but I can't remember what they are because I rarely listen to it. I feel like maybe it's a little over-long because the song isn't really one I adore to begin with.

It's great, much better version (like most of his extended versions). I love the end part with a few bars from 'Where Is Love?' from Oliver the musical/film.

I always found this song odd and somehow clumsy in comparison to the others songs from that era. I mean there r quite a few better songs that could have ended-up as the b-side of IWD4U. On the other end it's very narrative, it tells a real story and in terms of songwriting (lyrics) it was quite an unusual and complex song for Prince, who's always been more of a "poet" than a "storyteller". I guess that's what made him think that this song was special enough to deserve release.
