DISCUSS: Unreleased but Performed!!! I wanna know what everyone thinks: If unreleased/old/new songs are performed live at gigs or on TV appearances, they are official songs but unreleased!
Then, we have unreleased studio outtakes and soundboards that remain unofficial.
Both are bootlegged obviously! My question is: Aren't the unreleased but officially played songs kinda like free give away and regarded as such. It's not uncommon for musicians to give free music, we know Prince has nothing to give away free, but I don't think should be considered illegal as such.
Just an opinions. What U think?

No, they are not "free giveaways". Songs that Prince performs, officially released or not, are registered at ASCAP, meaning he holds the copyright, performance royalty rights and publishing rights. The fact the work has never been made available to retail is entirely irrelevant.
So, its still illegal. Its his property and the fact that he's never released it means (in a moral sense, not legally) that you've even less right to "own" that music - its performance was meant to be one of those special live moments, a memory that will live on with you. But, of course, people still bootleg and don't really care about such things. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Check out the 4 cd set from the 4dafunk label called "Playtime". It has all the songs Prince has performed live but has not released. It was released in 2007 or 2008 so it's not up 2 date with any of the recent unreleased songs performed live (like We Live 2 Get Funky, Welcome 2 America, Black Muse, etc) but it's well worth hunting down. | |

Thanks everybody that's very useful information from all of U. I just heard of the CD set "Playtime" yesterday, and was going to hunt it down.
It's kinda weird tho, if he performs a new song on TV, and it's not released he's gotta know this is going to get bootlegged, people wanna hear and see it again. I think Prince is more concerned about studio outtakes and soundboards being bootlegged! Just an opinion..
Isn't Roadhouse garden a cover song? Does this CD set also include covers? It looks as if it does..hasn't he performed more unreleased new songs post 2004 gigs?
