Kev Smith rules, but he was wrong for the Rainbow Children documentary

After reading Kevin Smith's interview regarding his Rainbow Children documentary, I can't imagine what the final product would look like. I bet Prince hated the footage, and I don't think we'll ever see it.

Though I love Kevin's work, his style is so rugged, "Generation X" and cynical that I can't understand how he could have been expected to capture Prince's odd, disjointed, mythical persona, much less lofty exchanges about race, God, liberation, art and music. I totally understand Smith's apprehensions.

I think the director Peter Greenaway (Prospero's Books, The Pillow Book) could have better captured the whole affair. He's as enigmatic and visionary as Prince... With his bizarre, stream-of-concious style and use of onscreen text, surreal color, random imagery, frames within frames, overlapping dialogue, even honest, yet artful nudity, I think the whole piece could have been a wildly provocative and beautiful piece that totally defined Prince's new era. It could have been a classic!

Oh well... Maybe next time.

Anyway, if you haven't seen Greenaway's work, check it out. Don't try to understand it... just enjoy it.

nod Kevin never should have taken the "assignment", he played himself. Prince made an odd choice asking a mediocre narrative "director" to do it, the whole thing is retarded...
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

Kevin is probably the last one on earth who would be kind, trusting and foolish enough to do the whole thing for free.

At least he thought what I said was funny.. tellin jokes n sh*t to clear the air in the room.

This isn't just Kevin Smith this is virtually everyone who has anything to do with Prince these days. The guy is wack, lets face it! I love his music but there is something that ain't right upstairs. Sorry to offend all the fams but it's fact. His business deals are a joke, his views on religion border on being right wing. The guy is on Planet Prince. He is not of this earth. So Peter Greenaway is more suited to filming Prince, is that because he's just as pretentious?!

i think anyone who uses the phrase 'Generation X' clearly isn't clued up on what's cool.

what does this phrase mean?

its like calling music 'Alternative'.

I totally agree with this all.. including Prince's being pretentious. Again here, Greenaway is the perfect match,

"Gen X" is a pretty tongue-in-cheek sociological term referencing those born 1968-1978 and their stereotypical pop culture sensibilities. I don't find too great a commonality there, but I sorta know what folks mean when they make the quip. As it were, Kev Smith also "gets the joke," and he's made one helluva career capturing the whole ethos.

As for what's "cool"... um... I'd just as soon leave that to MTV and the rest of the Gen Xer machine.

I have a strange feeling if Kevin Smith praised Prince on his DVD, some people on here would have a completely different opinion of his abilities...

You think they'd think more or less of him, Tom?

I wouldn't. His movies don't appeal to me. And, the fact that he's a fan of Prince's music is not going to change that.
