ManlyMoose said: We know the threads been done a million times but considering the vast amounts of awful filler in Emancipation its always fun to try and find small amounts of buried treasure and make it into a single good CD. Plus it helps for new memebers who would rather shelf the CD than dig for a gem or two. I love that it is 3 discs and wouldn't want it any other way. Think about it this way, if it were one disc, it could just as easily have been a disc of shit White mansion Mr happy I can't make you love me In this bed I scream Emale Joint 2 joint Frien lover sister... La la means I love you Style Sleep around Da da da The plan Right there you'd have, for me anyway, the single worst disc in princes entire discography. It makes me shudder to junk that could have been a potential 1 disc release, hate them all!! I thank all that is holy that prince released a 3 disc set so that I can play the ones I like and not have to suffer somebody else's choices. RIP

Um yeah but what does this have to do with anything?

Javi did a poll on this album, and the results were:
If you chose songs from the top of that list, you'd have a great single disc. Of course, in sequencing an album you'd have to think not just about which songs are best, but which work best together, and also pay attention to running times.

to those of you complaining about this thread....lighten up! We're just having fun. This is a 'what if' scenario, nothing more.If you're happy with the 3-CD set the way it is,that's cool. We're just imagining how a single disc could be.Personally,I think a 3-CD set of new music by any artist is too much to absorb. It's overkill.

I don't think annyone is complaining about the thread concept, just the number of times the same thread appears on the org. This is probably the most common thread on here, every two to three months at least. RIP

yup there were many threads regarding this topic but I think it always came down to "well since everyone prefers different songs for one album, maybe, just maybe, it actually means that Emancipation with 3 discs is already as perfect as it gets?" ...ok I admit the majority of fans at least agreed there were some obvious fillers. But really, I do not think it could've been more commercially successful if it were released as 1 disc... And no matter what, I feel like the first track should be "Emancipation" and the last track should be "the Love We Make". If anything, I'd arrange the songs differently but I really love all three discs so much...With this album, you get the best, AND the worst of Prince. U also get the typical Prince we're used to who sings about fucking just for kicks, and then there's this person who's so very much in love, who sings about how wonderful love is...and at the end of the day it just comes down to this one guy who's really trying to tell us that it's ok to be both guys lol There's just no such album as special as Emancipation! I can't get enough of this album.

Funny how so many people think Emancipation has some good tracks mixed with a lot of fillers but when you ask them to list the good and bad tracks they completely disagree which songs fit into which category.
Personally I wouldn't want to be without any of the tracks on Emancipation and I can't understand anyone who wants Prince to release less material.

LaLaLa means I love U...? blah blah blah

Maybe Prince loved it, how would you like it if it was one of the 12 songs total?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'd think it was a shitty cover song. blah blah blah
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I don't like it either but what if Prince did and put it on the one disc version of Emancipation?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'd do what I've already done and delete it from my playlist. Lifes too short for shit music. Just because it's on a CD (which I own in a box in my attic) doesn't mean it has to be played blah blah blah

I may be paraphrasing a bit but a great man once said that you need stuff that sucks to have stuff that is cool. That man's name was Butt-Head.

he was a wise man :) and I agree. Look at clothes for example. Some fashion is timeless & can be worn for years & years. Some is fashionable for a short time, but you grow attached to it & can't bear to let it go. And some is horrible, which you bought in a sale on a whim & now hide at the back of the wardrobe. You know it's there, but you're more than happy to never wear it again. I'm happy to let 'everybody loves me, lalala means I love you, All the midnights in the world, etc stay at the back of the wardrobe. To be honest, if i could get them into Narnia, I'd be happy blah blah blah

"Emancipation as Two Discs" would be a far more interesting thread at this point.
It really wouldn't need to be trimmed much to fit two CDs. There are all kinds of redundant intros and outros spread over the 3CDs.
Tracks like "Get Yo Groove On" might come off as "filler" to some, but with that type of tracks Prince was returning to the style of music that he did the best. The early-90s had been quite dark, aggressive and frankly speaking not as much fun as the 80s Prince. On Emancipation there was again a little bit of the spirit of the 1999 and The Dream Factory sessions thrown in the mix. I was just glad to hear Prince doing uplifting music again (Come and TGE were fine, but a little bit depressing with their overall tone).

Disc 2 of "Emancipation" is very very good, near perfect even. Add "The Love we make" and "Somebody´s somebody" as bonus tracks to that and I could live without the other discs. See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...

The Gold Experience is depressing? Maybe in spots but there are plenty of upbeat and fun tracks on it too.

^ I can see novabrkr's point about the early/mid 90s being aggressive and dark in tone.
I was looking at making a 12-track 1 disc ver. of Emancipation, and I realised, despite my protests that I don't like the album, it would be much easier to cut the chaff for a 2 disc set than for a single disc - I do like a good bulk of the material here, not love, but like.

I will sum up the 1000 previous threads about this:
Conclusion: leave it as it is; burn it if you must; but don't expect to find a consensus here.

It is not depressing in the same sense as some of the most mopey alternative or gothic rock is, but the 91-95/96 era was definitely Prince's darkest and most depressing era. The subject matter of his funk tracks wasn't really about having a good time anymore ("I was born on a blood-stained table with a cord wrapped around my neck", some party lyrics, huh?"). Sure, there's stuff like "We March", "Now" and "Dolphin" on TGE, but they're hardly comparable to stuff like "Let's Work", "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" or "Glam Slam". Prince's lyrics just got vengeful and so many of his tracks were simply about him being pissed off (or they were just plain filthy). I'm not sure if I find any of the tracks on TGE really that "uplifting" - perhaps for the reason that the lyrics on the tracks that were meant to be "positive" promise more than what they can deliver.
In any case, I still prefer TGE over Emancipation. I just think that there was some intrinsic value of him starting to do "happier" material again. It was not just about the lyrics, it was also about the sound and the overall production style.

I'm gonna start by rating previous suggestions. Turns out they all contained six of my choices.
bigd74's tracklist: 8 Vict0r's tracklist: 7.5 SoulAlive's tracklist: 6 My tracklist: 1. Jam Of The Year
Ok, let me have it!
The album could've been called: "The Love We Make".
Whether Emancipation should've been three discs or one depends on what you want. If you want an album with less filler that has a clear focus on being commercial then a one disc album would've been preferable. But if you want as many sides of Prince as possible, more good tracks (but also more filler) then a three disc album makes sense.

^ Better, at least u got the classic The Love We Make but not ideal.
I never understand the love for 'Jam Of The Year', it's a bit filler ish for me. I prefer the unreleased 'I am the DJ' which it was swapped with....
Swap Face Down and Sleep Around with White Mansion and We Gets Up.... then u've got a great and fun 1 disc..
Although the more people try to reduce it the more you think its best as a 3cd set..

Another thing I've never understood about these threads is why people seem to think that their one disc versions of Emancipation should have exactly 12 songs. Why not 14 or 15 songs?
The Disc 1 of Emancipation is one sort of a "mini-album". It's the only disc that sounds like a full album from start to finish. I suppose if Prince had decided to release the album as just one disc he would have kept many of those songs from that disc.

^ Good point...it does flow well as 1 album...but a lot of the classic tracks are also on Disc 2... [Edited 12/22/11 2:45am]
