The Dance (chocolate invasion)

Damn this song is so romantic! Every time I hear it I think Prince must have been feeling very good when he wrote it. Great song! Romantic teaser if you will lol starting to become a fav of mine's. Opinions?

I can't speak for Prince himself but.... somehow I don't think he was in a very good mood when he wrote this song. To me it sounds like he was a bit sad and a little skeptical of ever falling in love again because he quite clearly tells his woman: "I don't wanna hold your hand, cause if I do it might be the last time." Not to mention the other lyric that says "If I can't be your lover I don't wanna be friends." Sad ole Prince. sad

When I listen to it I hear the skepticism in his voice that's what makes it romantic. He really wants to, but something keeps him from doing it.

It's my preferred version. It has a wonderful vulnerability to it.

The 3121 version has its moments (love the piano work), but I find it bitter and overwrought.

Still, the two make nice relationship bookends. The CI version is the tentative, tender "falling in love" end, and the 3121 version is the bitter "end of the affair" treatment.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Most of the time I like the first version of most Prince songs I hear. The way Endorphinmachine was butchered with keyboards after the original mix is an example of me liking the first version of a song. With The Dance, I can say that as much as I liked the original, he totally nailed it on 3121. To me, one of his finest moments of the decade. Guitar is another great example of this, except even more extreme. I actually hated the original demo, but love the PE version. Even as a huge U2 fan, I don't mind the guitar part sounding like "I Will Follow."

This version is best IMO nice mediterranean flavour to it, the other has music that reminds me of Call of Duty or somesuch computer game.. is a bit too souped up, but it's not a bad remake either...

<<< my username is short for Danceelectric.

I have never liked the song The Dance...

too sugary and not catching like the old sexxy ballads Do Me Baby, Insatiable etc....

what I said on the misguided "INCENSE AND CANDLES IS A MASTERPIECE!" thread:

I prefer the NPGMC version as well. It's very understated and suited to the song. The 3121 version is drowning in layers of staged melodrama from the latin jazz tinges and orchestra to the screaming. It's fine, but I find it completely insincere compared to the original release.

and

I don't usually mind it [regarding the "drowning layers of staged melodrama" and "completely insincere" statements], but in this case, where we have an A/B comparison, released only 2 years apart, I prefer, for this song in particular, the more understated of the two. He needed a track like what "The Dance" turned into for 3121 for that position on the album, and so he re-worked it. It just feels like he needed that kind of track, so he dressed up something to fit that mold and it doesn't work organically.
