Guns N' Roses Duff McKagan 2 realize dream and work with Prince

On Monday of this week me and my brother attended a book signing with Duff Mckagan from Guns N Roses @ Wh Smith in Glasgow, Scotland..it was the release day for Duffs new autobiography in the u.k, he also happend to be playing The Garage music venue with his band, Loaded that evening..as many of u will know Duff Mckagan idolizes Prince and cites him as one of his biggest musical influences, claiming in a recent blog for seattleweekly.com that Prince gave him the confidence to move 2 l.a at the age of 19 to attempt to realise his dreams...

Duff arrived and was instantly afable with the assembled crowd, he started by asking everyone if they had any questions for him..after a few questions from others i asked loudly, "whats your favourite Prince album Duff?" when i asked this i was acutley aware of a slight rumbling of disaproval from the waiting fans behind me down the line..a murmer incredulity..as if i was asking Justin Beiber what his favourite Slayer song was?? clearly a few cats didnt know how big a Prince fan the bold Duff is...He replied by saying the first 7 albums, he said they albums are like "desert island discs 2 him"..i asked if he was still hoping 2 b able to play with Prince on a song and he said, "yes and i mite be one step closer 2 that, a friend of mine has asked me on behalf of Prince if id like 2 play on a track" he then said, "but maybe i shouldnt say 2 much about that"..he also cited Prince along with Larry Graham as his favourite bass player, he mentioned the Controversy and Dirty Mind albums as favourites 4 bass lines.....

Anyone who thought my question was a bit daft would have been instantly put straight as they read the book, where it doesnt take more than one page before our funked up brother is mentioned, one chapter in and a full page is basicaly devoted to explaining to the reader the importance of Prince to the young Duff...

peace n love..wee jimmy

Yeah, good story in more ways than one. First, the audience reaction. Duff is from Guns n Roses! He's only supposed to like hardrock! Well, Slash likes Disney soundtracks.
Secondly, it shows that Prince might be willing to move out of the safety zone and work with outside musicians as opposed to doing everything himself. To me this seems more interesting then a RevolutionReunion.

Nothing you've written supports the notion that this guy is actually going to work with Prince - as your thread title suggests.

Slash also praised prince in his autobiography.

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

He talks about the advent of MTV and how he thought it would be like a show he enjoyed called Don Kirshners Rock Concert where they showcased one band for an hour by the likes of The Stones,The Eagles The Sex Pistols and Sly And The Family Stone.

"MTV couldn't have been more of a polar opposite:they showed Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science" the Police, and Pat Benatar over and over.I would literally wait for hours to see a good song: and usually it would be either Prince or Van Halen"

Can't tell if that's praise. After hours of watching Prince or Van Halen, or after hours of watching all he got was Prince or Van Halen, maybe he didn't like either, or... Nevermind, don't really care if Slash likes Prince.

Outside of Lemmy (someone asked him if he ever saw Prince, and he replied "no I've seen Hendrix) , most bass players like R&B. Duff is a founding father of Seattle rock.

Duff and his drummer Greg went to LA for a while. Greg didn't make the cut for GNR and headed back to Seattle, and he gave GNR a ride to their first gig outside of Califonia. Greg eventually wound up in Mother Love Bone. Which turned into... Pearl Jam.

Duff is supposedly going to be opening for GNR on the US tour for some dates.

Nice thread, nice info. I just find it hilarious that some GnR fans had to eat crow about one of their favs being influenced by Prince. Too funny!

First off, thank you for asking the question and putting dumb-ass GNR fans in their place!!!

And for asking the follow-up question which you got a very interesting reply!

Here's hoping it happens for this next project...

ps.... I kinda agree with Genesia about the thread being a bit misleading...perhaps it should read "Duff MAY realize his dream"

Prince Is Responsible For Helping Me Learn To Be Alone
By Duff McKagan
Thu., Dec. 8 2011

I was a guy who played different instruments in different bands, and a friend of mine who was a big fan of Prince early on, turned me onto Controversy and Dirty Mind. He thought I might relate to the genius multi-instrumentalist from Minneapolis. The records were ground-breaking and forward-thinking. I was hooked.

When 1999 came out later that year, I found a respite and safe-haven in between the grooves on this epic double-album. It didn't matter that the direct topics of "Little Red Corvette" and "Something In The Water You Drink" didn't directly relate to me and my situations exactly; it was the intent and drama and impossibility of how good this record was that made me start to think that maybe ANYTHING was possible in my own life, too. I could rise up and get through all of this messy teenage young-adult stuff, with a little help from this record.

1999 became the soundtrack to my life through 1983, and when I decided to move to LA on my own, this record (by then on cassette), became my traveling companion and best friend.

Since then, many different records by different artists have become soundtracks to different parts and eras of my life, but nothing since 1999 has had such an impact, and given me the confidence and be-alone and stay-alone capabilities. I owe a lot to this record.

Thankfully, my need and training for being alone has come to pass. I am a happy family man nowadays, and find myself surrounded all of the time, by my girls, dogs, and stinky rock bandmates. But Prince's music remains a touchstone for me, and 1999 will always hold a special place in my soul. It gave me strength, and it gave me friendship. It made me work harder for the things I wanted to attain. It was the sturdy vessel that protected me in those choppy and scary waters of my coming-of-age sea change.

"Never let nasty stalkers disrespect you. They start shit, you finish it. Go down to their level, that's the only way they'll understand. You have to handle things yourself."

Next thing Lemmy Kilmister will be joining the Org cool Prince does have some diverse fans. Kudos to Duff. Did anyone ever hear of Prince producing Bon Jovi under the name The Bloody Stools? It may have just been a joke, but I would like to have heard that.
