This is a project I've been meaning to start for some time. With the help of orgers squirrelgrease and Xliberiangirl (supplied photos), I was able to produce a (very rough) concept of what a redesigned Purple Rain album COULD look like.

All digitally painted.

Personally, I love this...it looks like it would lend itself well to placing hidden images in the picture/background...much like Prince uses hidden/veiled messages in his songs.

I would purchase this...

Like I said in the initial post this concept needs a bit more refining, but I ultimately wanted to offer the final piece as a limited edition print. I'll definitely post the update when I can get around to tweaking the piece. Glad to see there is some interest in this artwork.

It would look cool also if he was wearing those big round sunglasses. Maybe as an inside cover.

@lust- Yeah that would be pretty sweet. I hadn't though about doing actual booklets, that's a good idea. Any particular photo you have in mind I might be able to reference?

Thank you for your honesty. I can see where your feeling comes from. I'm intending to re-paint the skin and punch up the value/contrast. I think saturating the orange and blue tones will bring more "life" to the illustration without need for altering the state of the eyes.

That is if I decide to keep this color palette! I'll have to play around with it.

I agree. If you changed the skin tone colors it would be better. Or you could put a glow around him (like budd-ah). Nice job though.

I like the layout of the piece but I have to agree that the skin tone colors give Prince a corpse-like appearance. Maybe you can remedy this by playing around with your palette as you stated.

I'm not keen on it if i'm honest, but it's not terrible. I really like the background.

The colors on the skin are much better here but I really like the background on the original. Maybe you should try the new one with the old background. It looks like fun. what type of software are you using?

Why does his face in this shot remind me so much of Keith from The Office (proper one).

If you watch the link then bear in mind that the reason they are dressed as such is because it's Red Nose Day (UK-wide charity day).

Other than that it's quite good. However the colour of his shirt clashes with the rest, appearing superimposed.

...and his skin makes him look like an alien from the original Star Trek

Is it based on a real pic? The facial expression is quite realistic, it reminds of something I can't quite put my finger on, maybe an UTCM-era pic (minus the hair obv.)

Hey!... The US Office is it's own thing after the first season, I actually prefer it! (It has gone off the boil now though, it's ran at least 2 seasons too long).
