What's The Best Prince Song He Made For Someone Else?

Watching the Original 7Ven today, I got into a discussion on Prince and songs he made for other people and while it was understandable that some think the songs he made for The Time...yeah The Time, I said it...were some of his best. My discussion got a little heated when I stated that his BEST was Love Bizarre for Sheila E.

Mind you, I was talking to some non-Prince connoisseurs, so I chalked it up to what the hell do they know about any damn thing.

And I thought I'd bring the discussion here.

Speaking for myself, I think Prince showed out so much on the long version of Love Bizarre, that I sometimes really forget that it is actually a Sheila E song and not a Prince song.

So what say you Orgers?

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Because if Prince had released it as his own, I would consider it one of his greatest songs. There are many other stellar, classic Prince songs that he gave to others, but you only asked for a singular pick. So that's the one that came to mind immediately. wink

No doubt! 777-9311 is JAMMING! smile

I would also have to go with 'Love Thy Will Be Done' I love his version!

'The Screams Of Passion' Although, I don't think his voice would suit it exactly, it would be cool if he kept that one.

ALSO, I am curious to know how he would do 'With This Tear' by Celine Dion! That would be interesting! I love that Jam!

"Love Thy Will Be Done" is really strong. I agree with "777-9311" as well, but I also think that "Gigolos Get Lonely Too" would of been great on "1999".

Really? Don't get me wrong, I love the song but it was just never that strong for me. I would consider Get It Up as the best amongst The Time tunes with Love Bizarre kicking both their butts. lol

That is the great thing about Prince as a writer: he can put himself in somebody else's shoes, imagine what it must be like to be them and write something that is tailor made for them. The best examples:
Nasy Girl
Cool
On the more serious side are the ones he wrote for Mavis Staples:
The Voice
Blood Is Thicker Than Time
Hmmmm... maybe he WILL end up writing something good for Andy Allo... Never give up hope, right?

I've always loved 'Time Waits For Noone' by Mavis Staples.

The Time's 'Get It Up' is a top favourite as well smile

That is a great one. The 1994 NPG guitar version is absolutely incredible. If Sonny T's vocals were replaced with Prince's, it would be perfection. I do dig Prince's early version with the "One Of Us" drum beat too, though.

He gave Sheila some of his best, because Glamorous Life is a perfect pop song, and Noon Rendezvous is pretty great too. I would also have to mention All Day, All Night. I'm not a fan of Jill's version, but his version is absolutely amazing to me, and I wish he had kept it for himself and included it on SOTT.

And to slip one more in: I don't know if it fits your rules for the topic, but he wrote 17 Days for someone else, so I've gotta give it a vote.

I didn't know that. Who'd he write 17 Days for? I can't imagine that song by anyone other than him. That's my jam. music

17 Days was originally intended for the second Vanity 6 album. The album of course never happened, it became the Apollonia 6 album instead.

Yep, what DigitalGardener said. Brenda was going to sing it; hence the "two cigarettes" line.

Oh ok. Thank you and DG for the 411. I could see Brenda doing 17 Days justice. She kicked ass on Blue Limousine. headbang

Yes, with the NPG, as mentioned by Squirrelgrease, it has Sonny on vocals.
