Prince's attempt at the New jack Swing "Don't Say U Love Me" was Prince's attempt at the "new jack swing" sound made famous by Teddy Riley. I thought the song was kinda cheesy. What do you think of the song?

That was more Levi's influence - all he was about was the "...hip-hop, baby".

Prince almost always sounds cheesy whenever he attempts to follow in the footsteps of any popular trends. It's okay when he tackles well established genres like jazz, rock, or blues, etc. But when he follows trends it's almost always a disaster. It's not so much that the music is bad, it just never seems to sound genuine or real. In other words, it always sounds fake. "You've got to believe in something... why not believe in me?"
