The MYTH of Prince's ROCK yet?

I stumbled on this glorious nightmare in 30 short pages

http://prince.org/msg/7/279744?&pg=1

and it reminded me of something:

My musical tastes lean far more on the rock/experimental side of things. I think I know when a song 'just ROCKS' in the same way that people who know funk know when a song is 'just FUNKY'. To my ears, Prince's 'rock' stuff largely does not rock. I feel like I might be able to start a thread analogous to the above, with 'funk' replaced with the word 'rock'.

I don't know what funk is. I had always wondered, 'hmm... I'm told Prince is funky, but would some people chuckle if I told them DMSR was funky the same way I chuckle when people say Let's Go Crazy is rockin?' But the thread I linked to above answered that question, so I don't really wanna get into that again. Let's go for 30 pages about Prince's rock music instead.

And before someone gets hurt feelings and starts using aggressive tones against me, lemme say that whether or not Prince's music is rock/funk/whatever doesn't make it less good, and doesn't affect my enjoyment of it at all. No need to use the phrase 'Purple Music', or express any sentiment along the lines of 'I don't care I love Prince!', either. Not to dismiss that sentiment in any way, but it's sort of 'old news' and not the kind of response I'm looking for.

So. Prince. Not that rockin'. Agree or disagree?

Wonder how long it will take for the camel toe picture makes its appearance.

Sorry...first thing I thought when I read the first sentence of this thread.

As to what the actual topic. Yes, it has been discussed. In a nutshell, it's all a matter of personal preference.

The thing about Prince is, he's never playing in ONE genre. His music is a rather pleasant (imo) amalgamation of so many sounds. His more rock focused tunes are inevitably going to be tinged with funk. His more funk centered sounds are inevitably going to have pleasant hints of pop infused throughout. That's what I absolutely love about him. He's not a genre purist, and that's for the best (imo).

Interested to see where this discussion will go.

Side note: While I do love the Purple concoction, sometimes I wish he would change up the formula a bit. Maybe focus a little bit more on other sounds, while still retaining the other infused elements.

Imagine The Undertaker with the funk toned down a notch, and the blues turned up a few!

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.
