I'm not sure Prince understood the lyrics. To change them like he did suggests arrogance. It's about love for another and feeling inadequate. Teenage meolodrama really.
The again, when you've been married to a woman like I have for the last fifteen years you soon realise you really are inadequate.
And I have a small cock. I'm going to add arrogant to my list of words that describe Prince. Prince never let being small get in his way but unfortunately his marriages didn't last as long as yours has. . Congrats! ...bing ain't lie.

I don't think Prince was very emotional when he was covering that song, just a bit though; he's a showman, and sometimes, he acts...

He changed the words on purpose to show a different perspective on the song (The point of view in which he sings is changed from Radiohead). At first I was put off-but upon actually listening to Prince's lyrics- he gave it a real interesting twist. I have to say I really disagree. Whether he deliberatley changed the lyrics or not is sounds clumsy and it doesn't really work for me.
Emo?!!!!!!!

I often wondered if he cried when he wrote the Vikings song; I know I did after I laughed so hard. Prince's Sarah

why is it so hard to accept he didn't want to sing the same lyrics? anyone has the stupidity to accept radiohead is a better lyricist than prince & the band? No, na? so why the hesitation? guy has his own idea...he liked the song and didn"t want to sing the same lyrics...capice? [Edited 12/21/11 10:38am] Funky alien

That's why some folks think Radiohead is an overrated band that only makes depressing music... bleh

it was dark but it wasn't as depressing as the radiohead version. he wasn't self depreciating when he did it which i thought was brilliant lol. The guitar solos are the most emotional parts of the performance but i don't really see it as an emo performance all n all. [Edited 1/1/12 9:00am]

Well most people who think that only really know them for Creep.

It's was a bluesman's take on the song...he was trying to turn it into the blues. Changing the words and getting overly emotional for a loose rendition is part of that tradition.
I doubt the song has any meaning to him, or that he understood it...he seems to miss the point of The Pixies infleunced soft verse, guitar break into the chorsu thing... but it probably was a Prince-esque message to someone he knew who used to listen to the song a lot. That, or the same motivation as doing a Foo Fighters song, where in his mind, he's making it his. based on some imagined vendetta.
Wasn't the deal with Youtube that they started to take down EVERY version of Creep, as if Prince owned it, including theirs?

That cover was a trip to the butcher's shop.
By flipping the lyrics' antagonist, Prince robbed the song of its emotional meaning (transforming self-loathing into derision). Screaming and cooing couldn't rescue it. Neither could the solo.
It's a shame someone so resistant to covers of his music can't show respect to the songs he covers.
