Preacher to a sinner - OK, yes that makes sense is the correct one, sorry years old brain fart there. You're right.

Preach her to a sinner could make sense (she's so amazing, she'll turn a sinner to a good man) - but in the context of her being a hot piece of ass, doesn't make sense!

Nouveau....(by the way your name reminds me of one of Prince' best songs, Le Grind)......well the phrase 'preacher to a sinner' actually means to turn someone from good to bad, so by turning her gay, he is turning her from an innocent into a sinner, that's how i've always interpreted it anyway...

So it's just some hastily written line that could be interpreted in many ways that makes you suspect Prince is gay instead of, I don't know, all the other sexually ambiguous stuff he's done ever since the start of his career?

He just knocks off the 'turn' from the second line because he already said in the first, see. He's not turning her gay - how would that make sense in the context of a song about him wanting to get between her legs?!

This makes the most sense, and there is a pause. If you connect the gay to the preacher then its a funny joke about priests/preachers being gay... but that doesn't make sense with "to a sinner"

but if it's two separate things:

Unless I'm just really oversimplifying, "gay" means carefree and/or happy. And if I'm remembering the etymology of "gay," it became used to indicate or mean homosexual due to the stereotypical notion about most homosexual men being flamboyant and carefree. So, I always understood "gay preacher" to mean "happy preacher," which makes sense if we consider that someone who wants to live as they believe their god commands will not be happy or have peace if he sins. Of course, it is not beyond Prince to play with words, knowing that listeners expect his lines to be filled with double meanings so, yes, a lot of what some folks have been saying is probable. "Turn a gay man straight" and "Turn a preacher into a sinner." He seems to be, as usual, trying to impregnate the phrase with as much meaning and controversy as possible, which creates strong or memorable lines, the ability of the line, phrase, or image to say the most with the least amount of words. But, in the literal, I always understood it to mean "happy preacher."
