Purple Rain Live in Milan 2010

I still can't get enough of this powerful performance. I have seen a high quality youtube video of this performance and wanted to know if this is the same quality on the Live in Milano DVD boot ?

I just can't believe all the things people say !

Still not sure why this performance of Purple Rain stands out for people. They've been pretty much the exact same for the past 5 years.

I think it's the live sound of the hohner. To me I think it's his best live rock tone with it which is why it stands out to me.

chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads

This one for me just had some kind of raw power to it. Really awe inspiring, the rendition was full of emotion. Love it.

Its such a shame...its such a shame"-Purple Rain (Milan 2010)

Recently, like many of you, I've seen many many videos of Prince in concert lately. I usually just skim over them, pass them over without watching them since I've seen so much and am on overload. The video capture of The Love We make re-visit live was awesome in that "I can't believe he sang that one" feeling and it got me into watching some of the vids again. But the Milan 2010 performance of Purple Rain? This right here...IT'S PERFECT! I teared up. Maybe I'm a sucker but whatever. During the performance, the camera angle does not move off of him. There is no panning to an adoring audience, no cuts to other band members. It's all one complete take. Director Mark Rydell, who directed one of my top ten films of all time, The Rose, mentioned in the directors commentary that when Midler sang When A Man Loves A Woman, it was rare and remarkable because the camera did not cut away from Bette Midler in the performance as many filmed live performances have previously. Arguably that performance was the showstopper of The Rose. If you get a chance to see this PR Milan performance, watch and listen to the cadence and emotion that Prince uses when he adlibs and sings the lyrics :"It's such a shame...it's such a shame..this freindship had to end" portion.

The way he sings that section is...sublime? That part made me actually made me rewind the video back to the beginning and PAY ATTENTION rather than just brush this off as just another tired (but true) warhorse/signature song live Prince performance on tube. And I am glad that I did.

And he left the usual heavy dogma that he has sometimes slipped into it this past decade out of it. Its almost as if he knew the filming of this one was going to be massed produced and needed it to be generalized for the public instead of beating them over the head as the past decade. Im floored

The emotion that he puts forth during the solo on his face which the camera captures completely? I cried to Purple Rain again. It's akin to the emotional pull of Stevie Ray Vaughn's version of Little Wing emotion-wise.

And that wasn't it. He slays the solo using the Controversy Hohner. You can even see the scratches at the top of the guitar during the solo-ing. And how he places the geetar on the ground in respect to it at the end and he bows? This was a PERFECT performance for ANY artist. Im not even going to say "in my opinion" because if you who've seen it don't agree then you are part of the underworld, have two left feet, eat only asparagus tips sans seasoning, read the endings of books first, spit, and can basically go to hell. I wonder if the audience who was privy to this performance appreciate what they were able to witness. One thing for sure and Ive said it many times --Europe inspires Prince. Some of the best performances Ive seen and heard have been from overseas.

Please please please if there is a god or superior being above, give us peace in the middle east, stop famine and pestulence(sp?..I aint got time to look it up ), make man love his fellow man (republicans calm down I dont mean gay marriage but yes that too, whatever works), but please let this be preserved somewhere and not erased so that I and others can have it for posterity and for when colored boys who have considered suicide when the rainbow isnt enough.

One final thought (c) Jerry Springer. This reminds me of The Everlasting Now line hen he talks about "doesnt matter how much you made, how many people you laid, how many you slayed, to them you're still a spade" line (paraphrased) because ...i...it seems like most of the internet fans focus on the boolshet rather then the art (as I've always soap boxed about). I mean how can you focus on ish like tax payment lawsuits, packaging or lack thereof etc etc when you watch or experience performances such as this. Im sure as hell people were not worrying about Prince suing websites back in 2001 when he began singing Empty Room.

The last time I got this feeling of a Prince performance was when he did The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance of Guitar Gently Weeping. Billy Sparks is not only nodding yes and biting his lip to this Milan performance, but he got snot running down his nose and he crying this time.

Yes it's the emotion and the energy from the crowd that make this such a great performance. You can tell the crowd were loving it and Prince responded. The guitar solo at the end is so moving and you can tell he was so in the moment. I have seen Prince play this song hundreds of times over many years but as rdhull says it's perfect.

So has anyone seen the DVD boot or just the youtube video ? Is live in Milano the best boot for quality ? Cheers

It's just amazing! One of the first clips of a performance that did make me cry. The emotion and conviction in his vocals are so WIDE. The guitar is just speaking another language, yet the same very language that his vocals do. So great and powerful! smile The audience gave him exactly what he needed to bring this out. The love!

The expressions! Everything! I don't know what it is, I can see why some people think we are being redundant talking about it, but I think it takes a special event that would cause connection to this, and this performance is more than the answer.

I was lucky enough to be there and the solo was incredible, the pure emotion he put into it - the facial expressions and above anything the total shreding of the guitar was out of this world.

After the concert it was all a bit of a blur but i remember watching the youtube vid of the guitar solo about 100 times when i got home with my mouth hitting the floor - incredible.

It was a great gig with a great crowd, definatly one of the best of 20ten tour if u ask me!

cool

I'll tell you a secret. He could perform Purple Rain the same for the next twenty years, and I'll still tear up every single time.

It's more of a personal thing on my end, though. That song has helped me through so much in my life, and that song has pulled me out of such a dark place that I was in in my life. So I'll always tear up, no matter if he does it the same or spices it up or slows it down even more or speeds it up. It's just a very special song for me for more than one reason.

Live, not live, live performances that are the same, live performances that change, I'll always tear up, no matter how it's done.

I think it's the fact that he has raw emotion here in this performance, you can hear it in the way how he plays the guitar.

I heard many versions but a lot of live versions are just not great, because the song sounds to cheesy or too ''las vegas''.

Actually Purple Rain should be played only by guitar and Prince alone. imo

This performance is amazing, because he puts everything into it. Purple Rain is to me, one of his most personal songs and also can relate to anyone, also to me. Song always has been special to me, but mostly in it's original version because it has that raw emotion, which I can't hear in most Purple Rain live performances.

But this performance just has that emotion. It really comes from the heart this time.
