A "What If..." about Lovesexy & The Black Album Considering the stories about Prince's spiritual conflict during the post Dream factory era, I think it would have been interesting if he'd used tracks from both the Black Album and Lovesexy to create a single work to portray his inner turmoil. Maybe something like this:
DARKside 1. Le Grind 2. Scarlet P*ssy 3. Superfunkicalifragisexy 4. When 2 R In Love 5. Rock Hard in a Funky Place
LOVEside 1. Eye Know 2. Glam Slam 3. Anna Stesia 4. I Wish U Heaven 5. Lovesexy (or perhaps Positivity)
Thoughts?

I've never seen any photos other than the cover shot. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

No "Alphabet St.", No Deal.

That's how I've always felt Black/Lovesexy are anyway. They're two very different sides of the same coin for me blah blah blah

Definetely "When 2 R in Love" in the LOVEside We make our own way to heaven everyday
"The only Love there is, is the Love we make"

I think it's perfect on both sides. The lyrics are pretty raunchy, so they fit on the Lust side just as well as far as I'm concerned blah blah blah

Very interesting. I would say that your configuration would have sold just as well or possibly better than Prince's. However, Alphabet St. has to be in there somewhere as it's the only song on either album that would sell as a single.

Wait! THREE disc set... hear me out:
Pull When 2 R in Love from both albums, and include it as a 45, same song on both sides. Like, as an entreacte between the two. Like Prince's lust from the first half creates a divine sexual/religious revelation that inspires the second half. Whatcha think?

So you´ve never seen the alternate Lovesexy album cover? The one that looks a little bit reminiscent of the 1979 "Prince" album cover? It looks really, really bad though.....bad not meaning good. I would post it for you if I could find it again but it has disappeared. Here´s a link to an old thread about it but the images are gone;

"When 2 R in Love" always sounded more like a Black Album ballad than a Lovesexy ballad to me, because of the style of sound and it's tone. It's doesn't have that bright pop synth tone that a lot of Lovesexy has. It seems very midnight. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I've never quite believed what i've read when it comes to why he pulled The Black album, the whole bad trip thing, i mean why pull an album when it's been shipped, apologising and saying don't buy it in a secret message in the next video but then play 2 songs from it on the albums replacement's tour. something's not quite right. would've made an awesome 2 disc set. i've always loved Lovesexy and would be in my Prince top 3 albums.

But if he was really punishing the record company for making him release SOTT as a double instead of a triple it does make sense.

The bad trip thing is real enough and has been corroborated by several band members/employees at the time. As for it being the actual cause of Prince withdrawing the album, who knows. Prince's self-mythologises constantly, and this may be a mythology (the LS tourbook story) of a mythology (of the 'vision of God'/trip thing).
It may have been that Prince did a total 180 on releasing the album, even if it was going to be released under the radar somewhat - and the bad trip was the catalyst that made him pull the plug on the release at such a late stage - but the whole vision of God thing is BS.
Whatever the truth - he certainly used the withdrawal of the LP as promotion for Lovesexy, since it added to the mystique of Prince and his work.

That's pretty much my view.
He may have been unhappy with the Black album and this was catalysed by the "bad trip". His master stroke is to then pull this good/bad life dichotomy in to his art. He deliberately recorded a more spiritual and uplifting record and therefore, diametricly opposed it against the Black album. This only served to make Black the bootleg success it was - which was no bad thing and most likely intentional. Prince knew this would only add to his mystique and hoped all this exposure would also lead to more record sales.
It is, therfore, no accident (and, again, a brilliant artistic touch) that he included Black songs on the Lovesexy tour. In fact, the Lovesexy tour is actually kinda what the OP is getting at here. So, Prince has actually already done it - he did the Lovesexy tour as a "good winning out over evil" story and pitted his racier songs (including Black songs) against the more spiritual works of his.
David Bowie is another great example of someone who took his life situations and expressed them fully in his art, in more than just the songs (Aladdin Sane and Ziggy characters, for example). Prince is the same. [Edited 12/13/11 10:44am] ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

He did it to show how he's changed. The first half is really dirty and dark and then Prince (just like in real life) has an epiphany and decides to become all religious which is when Anna Steisa is played
