Da Bang!

What are peoples thoughts on this song? I remember the first time i ever heard this when i stuck on disc 2 of Crystal Ball and my first reaction was holy shit! A great example of how to take your influences, in this case Hendrix, and twist into something that sounds positively fresh and quite frankly brilliant, and it sounds so spontaneous too. In fact it reminds me somewhat of sped up, freaked out version of Manic Depression. You gotta love it.

One of my all-time favorites! woot!

The liner notes indicated he recorded it in a single session and then rode around in his limosine blasting it like 30 times...neat!

I don't have the liner notes (I ordered my copy from NPG Retail, which substituted the Kamasutra CD for the booklet), and the "online booklet" website appears to be gone... but didn't this song date from the early years of the prince period; i.e., 1993 to mid-1996?

I was very disappointed with the first release credited to prince ("The Most Beautiful Girl in the World"), because I was expecting something that sounded fresh and different--I thought he'd use the first single to make a clear break from his former identity. But TMBGitW aside, he recorded some amazing stuff in that time period (e.g., "What's My Name"), even though he didn't have much commercial success.

Oh, while I didn't like the regular version of TMBGitW, I did like some of the remixes on The Beautiful Experience EP.
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.

Easily one of my favorites on Crystal Ball...Prince creates a new genre: JAZZ PUNK!!! I always liked the effects on the vocals here.

I actually find the crazy parts to the song really taxing; they ruin the song for me, aswell as the sceeching. That said, I dig the luscious groove inbetween.

Killer song! I love everything about it, from the vocal
effects to the screaming. The guitar sounds wild and I
always smile when the last guitar part comes around and
there's this thunderous deep blast behind it, as if the
floodgates have been opened.

“Da Bang” and “What’s My Name?” are probably the two best young compositions on Crystal Ball. That whole quiet-loud-quiet-loud alternation rockets me into a mosh pit rage whenever I hear it (and I'm a fairly laid-back dude)! I can totally see why Prince would blast Da Bang in a car over and over and over... I've certainly done it.
