On stage with Maceo, Prince said Larry was the ' architect of funk' Is Larry more important and more respected by Prince than james brown in terms of funk or was he just saying Larry is innovative. I thought james brown invented that word [Edited 12/6/11 10:09am]

Well, he did invent slap bass and was in the mother of all bands, Sly & The Family Stone, let alone his own - Graham Central Station....all there is to it, mate. Prince ain't too far off. Now, is he the best at it? That's the thing you debate. [Edited 12/6/11 10:33am] This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

No......that would be one Bootsy Collins.

he could be the architect, but it still takes more than one person to build a building.
why is it that because he said larry is great that it would diminish his respect for james brown? theres plenty of love to go around.

I get the impression Graham Central Station was a bigger deal to Prince than Sly and the Family Stone was.

Give P a break on this one I think. Most of the stuff he says on stage like this is just off the cuff. He was probably just acknowledging Larry's contribution to the funk. He's already stated previously his admiration for the fathers of the funk - JB, Maceo, George Clinton etc., etc... I can see him on any other night saying the same about Maceo, about George, about... whichever other funk veteran he has on stage with him that night.

Well, Larry's early career (with Sly) is contemporary to early James and George, so in the end he definitely IS among the architects of funk. So saying "THE architect" might be exagerated, but it's not as if Prince had said that, IDK, Rick James was the architect of funk (Rick was one of the greatest ever, but he came much later). In the case of funk, Sly was one of the architects. Larry was one of the brick-layers.

Thank you!!!!! I am not taking away from Larry's innovation, however, he really isn't a Bootsy when you get down to it....Bootsy is the top of this funk chain and Larry is second... "A united state of mind will never be divided

I need to check my eyes. It was Prince saying Larry was an architect lol I can kinda see his point but then again, if anything, Sly and James were the architects, like someone said, Larry was a bricklayer, a real good bricklayer at that. But I have no prob with Prince calling him an architect. Gotta hand it to him, when it comes to legends he know, he gives it up for them. [Edited 12/7/11 16:15pm]

So was it jb's 1 that influenced bootsy so much to take it to the next level.Bootsy sure does love the 1.Same with prince too on stage, he says it alot. So if bootsy says james brown told him about the 1, then that in itself is showing respect to the true arhitect. But you gotta speak about maceo, fred wesley jabbo. His whole band probably came up with that with james brown for all we know..Maceo is a beast still at his age to play like that.
Prince's shows have always had funky elements but he is becoming more and more like james brown on stage.Even though james brown always loved up michael jackson, it is prince who in more ways been truer to james brown as a similar performer on stage. He is turning more and more into james brown when not on the guitar. But influences are interesting in certain people's lives.Especially performers [Edited 12/7/11 15:25pm]

Ask Bootsy and he'll tell you...Larry Graham was KING.
There would be no Parliament/Funkadelic without Sly and the Family Stone.
Bootsy may have surpassed him in many folks opinion, but Graham's slap bass on "Thankyou..." started it all. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....
