I'm not certain but it's likely that Prince saw more money/sales/radio play from Tom's version than his own original take. On the Brits just now they used the Kiss horns as Tom's signature intorduction... | |

Tom Jones has a great voice, and he's very talented. 40 years in the industry don't lie. Of course he's made a living out of stealing black music but hey! 
As for the Prince cover... it's dreadful. I cannot fathom why someone would replace the lovely wahwah guitar with synth horns etc. Madness. | |
