The Prince myth For me the greatest Prince myth is that “Prince hasn’t produced a good album since blank”. With the “fan” filling in whatever number of years they like. Its one of the more curious aspects of the mythology surrounding Prince. And it seems to be more associated with him than most other artists of his magnitude.
I have my own theory about this. One Prince’s greatest strengths (versatility) has in one regard worked against him. Song to song and album to album Prince has never been one to meet the expectations created by his previous work. So many of the fans who got into Purple Rain were a certain type of fan. They latched on to a sound that for Prince was a just a passing fancy. And with each subsequent album he has continued to veer away from that sound.
I believe those fans that have been satisfied with Prince’s output have been the “restless” fans like Prince himself. I have never looked for a particular sound from Prince and view each new work as its own entity. I have never expected another “1999” or another “TRC” for that matter.
Prince has never “lost” me. And it never entered my mind as he progressed from album to album that a certain one was the last “good” one. For me whatever “magic” or “genius” Prince has is inherent in his work regardless of genre or production tools. Whether organic or digital the idiosyncrasy of his craft is always apparent for me.
I hear a song like “Beginning Endlessly” and I’m not really reminded of any other song. It is its own creation and sits comfortably amongst his other work. I feel richer for experiencing it. Luckily there are at least some fans who feel the same way lol.

You are mythtaken.
All other artists with any sort of longevity have exactly the same things said about their work by their fans. MJ did, Madonna did, Dylan, Joni.... Everyone!
Besides, the greatest prince myth is the one about his ribs.
blah blah blah | |

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Oh look, it's a tricky99 thread where he/she attempts to set themselves apart from the fanbase by berating us for being fickle, lowly and not evolved enough to appreciate the Prince canon in it's holy entirety. Well it has been a few weeks since the last one, so I guess it was due.

Same thing can be said about the even more constant bitching threads. Difference being that i see points in this thread as opposed to just whining. Completely agree Tricky!! This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

TO focus on the named song....I like Beginning Endlessly... I think it could have been cooked a bit longer, but it a good composition and dramatic. It's got those retro Van Halen synths. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

It was well known that Eddie Van Halen was "inspired" by Prince with his use of the OB-8 on the song "Jump"...
Anywho... as usual, Tricky99, I agree with you completely. "He's a musician's musician..."

It's not that complicated. People like what they like.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Like clockwork. You know the exact construct before even reading it. I do enjoy reading the reactions from my fellow knuckle draggers that "just don't get Prince's new music". If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

It's all about personal opinion, either you dig it or you don't...

Yeah, 'IMHO', 'each to their own', yada yada yada. I understand, but its Prince were talking about here, and of course its ok to compare and contrast with his past output, but really, why so much? I completely agree with Tricky99 and uuhson in that because he mixes it up so well that he's on a different level. That is why he's the most underated artist. Because of his versatilty (and really, like nobody else) he gets ignored; ignored as singer, songwriter, producer, guitarist (although he does seem to be finally getting recognition for this). There are other singers, other gutarists etc who because they only do that one thing recieve acclaim and yet are no way as good as Prince. And then of course, because he doesn't play by the rules, his music is not heard, and so again he gets ignored. Come on, don't you think, there hasn't been anything in the last few years by any other act as good as what we've heard from Lotusflower, or even 20Ten, for instance. We should know better.

I think the greatest Prince myth is that Prince could play 28-30? instruments. I think that it was his manager who said that was a myth. I either read this or heard it on MTV during the 80's.

Greatest Prince myth is that his talking voice is higher than MJ's
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
LOL, that's a myth within itself. The other myth is that Michael talking/speaking voice is high. In fact Michael's actual speaking voice was much,MUCH lower than he used on some occasions in the media. His actual speaking voice was the voice that you heard during the spoken intros at the SuperBowl, during the TII concert announcements, during intro to song Dangerous, etc.

I think most of us find gems in all of his work. There's only a few who are truly stuck on a certain period and won't accept anything else from him without complaining. I think those who do that are full of it though because they still track everything down with a fanatical devotion to this day! When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I've been on this website for 15 years this month, and I honestly can't believe anyone even still gives a fuck one way or the other

I have to agree with the OP. Adding... The negative threads are tiring and seem more prevalent then the positive ones. Not much of a balance here.

Well that's highly not a "myth", it's opinion. U do know what a Myth is right? Geesh "tricky put the phone down,"....
