Re: Prince on American Bandstand and Soul Train

Anyone know how many times Prince has performed on American Bandstand and Soul Train ? I'd also like to know any type of dates or general info. I'm well aware of the AB appearance w/ "I Wanna Be Your Lover".

I think Soul Train played 'Sexy Dancer' in 1980 without Prince there

AND THAT'S IT

Prince was on Soul Train in the 90s and played "The Most Beautiful Girl" and "Now".

Thanks for the Sexy Dancer info, did not know that. A real shame he never performed on Soul Train in the 70's or 80's. Kind of shocking he didn't.

I saw a clip of that on Soul Train's 25th anniversary show years ago. Back in '79/80, a street dance troupe (Electric Boogaloo Lockers maybe??) did this cool, robotic routine to the song. One guy did the backslide (what the moonwalk was called then).

All info from The Vault.

26th Jan 1980: American Bandstand.

Prince lip syncs I Wanna Be Your Lover & Why You Wanna Treat me So Bad. Also includes the infamous interview with Dick Clark.

7th May 1994: Soul Train.

Prince "performs," (lip syncs) the Mustang Mix of The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, Now, Acknowledge Me and Love Sign.

Prince also appeared on the Soul Train Music Awards on 10th March 1992.

He accepeted the Heritage Award. There was also a musical tribute by Stephanie Mills, Rosie Gaines and Patti LaBelle.

"America" has been played as well. There was footage online once, with the studio audience dancin' their @$$ off

He was only on "Soul Train" once and that was in the 1990s when the show was on it's last legs and a disgrace to what it used to be.

As for Prince songs played for the dancers throughout the years, "Soul Train" played many:

Sexy Dancer

Let's Work

1999

Lady Cab Driver

Little Red Corvette

Delirious

Kiss

U Got The Look

Partyman (Video)

Those are just the songs I've seen them play. They probably played even more.

Technically, Prince never played Soul Train. He did as prince because he was trying to introduce himself as a "new" artist and promoting an album that wasn't going to be released.

As for AB, he did it once, but I do remember AB playing his hits for the audience to dance to. I specifically remember 1999 and Little Red Corvette.

I thought those performances took place on solid gold.

Technically he never played as sillysymbol either. The "performance" was mimed, lip synched, whatever you want to call it. I just watched it again, and it's as cringeworthy now as it ever was.

They did, 1999 on 29th January 1983, and Corvette on 13th May 1983.

I think that Kewlschool means that AB played those tracks to their studio audience to dance to, without Prince being there.

I'd love to see the original footage of the crowd dancing to Sexy Dancer and Lets Work. If I could buy all the old SOul Train episodes, I'd be all over it. Yes, I have the box set and it is amazing, but theres so much more. I want LL Cool J's performance of "Rock The Bells" so badly. THey make up for it by including SOS Band's "Take Your Time", which was an absolute staple in our household.

Didn't all performers hve to lip synch on Soul Train and American Bandstand?

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I'm not sure, Soul Train was not a show that was broadcast in the UK, at least not that i'm aware of.

Soul Train everyone was required to lip synch. Not sure about AB-but appeared that everyone lip synched.

In the early 70's Al Green,James Brown and Stevie Wonder all performed live, with their full bands.

In the early 80's, Luther Vandross sang live, even did "If This World Were Mine" with Cheryl Lynn

The James Brown one is mind-blowing...

I may be wrong but I think WAR performed live too

It was cheaper for shows to have musical acts lipsync because the producers would only have to pay the music licensing fee for the just song itself.

If the songs were performed live, then the producers would also have to pay an additional performance royalty to the guest.

The performances did, however, I remember Bandstand playing them for the audience to dance to.

In the early days, no, but in the later days, I think it was a requirement.

Not all of ST's performances were lip synced. Sly Stone, Barry White, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, James Brown and a few more didn't lip sync.

Barry White had his whole Love Orchestra on there, that performance was amazing!

Also don't forget his performance on The Midnight Special; if I recall this was before American Bandstand -- same year, same songs lip sync'ed but his outfit was a bit more daring shall we say...
