Just bought it at amazon and I do like it "I'm not a human, I am a dove. I'm your conscious, I am love"

+1.
You would think that, given his recent interview comments, he would put this out on vinyl. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

I just listened to the 90 second samplke
1. These lyrics are horrible 2. Is that autotune or really really slopy layering?

I'm back to buying everything I can on vinyl. Most artists include a CD or digital download code, which makes vinyl an easy choice. It's a little more expensive, but I don't mind. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Okay, you like the original. I do too. But we also have the original on bootleg and can listen to it whenever we want. So what's the big deal? Now we have one version more than we used to, and I like that. I prefer more material to less.
I guess I don't see why folks take this stuff so personally. Sometimes Prince songs get a redo and the new version is worse ("In a Large Room with No Light") but sometimes the new version is better ("The Dance"). And regardless of which one you prefer, it doesn't take away from the old version to release a new one.
As for this new version of "Extraloveable"...I like it. I'm not saying it's superior (well, the sound quality is superior); it's just different. And the fact that Prince's approach to recording is different in his 50s than in his 20s should not be surprising to anyone.

Maybe, for the B-side, he could include a version that has neither a Care Bear rap nor a rape reference, for those who don't find either of those particularly enjoyable. Decent, though I can't tell if he use autotuning or some sort of layering. The original outtake is obviously better, but regardless.
Here's my thought: What if Prince had released that original outtake instead? Sure maybe master and clean it up (or heck, even chop out the rape lyric if you want), I wonder if that would've made a bigger impression. I mean its one thing Prince trying, like way too many pop music masters, to stay musically "relevant" (i.e. copying/deriving modern trends/hooks), it's another if a certifiable gem from his "golden era" was unearthed.
Really, as biased as this will sound: Prince's 1980s "classic" work basically has aged incredibly well, much more than most of his subsequent work. Maybe that would've created more buzz than simply yet another Prince new track which initially people praise like gravy (look at the iTunes reviews) only to have buyer's remorse very shortly afterwards?
Of course, with no advanced buzz and just dumped randomly there...it still probably wouldn't have hit the Top 100. But Prince does as Prince does. He won't let basic business logic get in his way.

it's #36 right now on the iTunes R&B/Soul songs chart. It's not in the top 200 overall songs, though.
Perhaps it'll move up more, it's listed on the front page of the itunes store.

I can't imagine him releasing the original version with the rape lyric. In fact I don't think he should release that version officially as a stand-alone single, even if he were inclined to, although if there is ever a box set including outtakes from that period, it should be included. Perhaps he could release an edited version of the original, but some of the other lyrics may be troubling to him as well (e.g., the references to his parents).
However, I think he could come up with something better than what he did release. In the context of the song, Elmo and Care Bears are almost as creepy to me as the old rape reference. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

Oh I agree about the rape lyric, but here's my angle: This isn't like a CD single where you have to spend a good amount of money to release. Specifically, Prince's money unless it's part of agreement with one of the labels. However as this is a digital single, it's just a data file. Apple gets their (large) slice, and it costs Prince little to dump it out there.
In other words, he risks and loses nothing if he had released the original version. I just...look, I thought the 2011 version of "Extra Lovable" was a fine if perhaps too unremarkable enough of a track for a single. In other words, "good" songs sell regardless of when they were produced. Simply just modern production tricks aren't enough.
But it's not like I disagree with your point.

The buzz that Prince seems to want to create about this release is that it's one of his greatest outtakes that has been held back for so long, and now it's finally there. I don't think he wants a media story about the rape lyric, which could happen even if it was edited out of the song. It's an embarrassing line to have in there. Just like John Lennon probably wished he hadn't sung about tracking down his girlfriend and killing her in "Run for Your Life."
Personally, I don't think the original version of "Extra Loveable" is that great. It's OK, but I don't listen to it that much. Most of the songs that Prince held back from releasing were held back for a reason, and the reason is that they weren't as good as the material he did release. The better stuff came out eventually when he started running out of new ideas. One big exception, in my opinion, is the original version of "Old Friends 4 Sale," which had brilliant lyrics that were changed to nonsense because they were too personal. There may be other songs like that in the vault that I'd love to hear. In general, though, I think the stronger unreleased material tends to be alternate versions of songs that he did release, like the original "We Can Funk" and the Controversy-era "Tick, Tick, Bang." There must be other early takes of certain songs that haven't circulated, including songs that he regularly performs and could be released without raising any problems with the JW police.
But, as I've said, I hope he doesn't put out any vault material because I could use the $$$ to buy other stuff. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

I agree with what you say. Just downloaded the new version, and I do really like it very much. It sounds cool and it is funky! I would love this to be a success for Prince! It's a song that should be played on the radio and become a hit!

It's moving up...it's #3 on the iTunes R&B songs chart, and has now made it to #144 on the overall chart. Honestly, already much better than I had expected...F.U.N.K. never made the iTunes Top 200 at all.
After he's done in Canada he should come back to the US and do a little promotion. I think people might check out his songs if they a)knew about them, and if b)the songs he promoted turned out to actually be available for download! [Edited 12/2/11 9:12am]
