How many artist has Prince put on? There are several artist that basically got their start being associated with Prince. In addition 2 that, there are also several artist whose had a hit song or well known song that Prince wrote.
My question is, is there another artist that has direct inflence on several other artist careers?
Prince: Dez Andre Cymone Sheila E (Not started by Prince by greatly influenced) W&L The Family The Time Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis Mazarati Vanity 6 Apolonia 6 Eric Leeds (Not started by Prince by greatly influenced)...and a few others I can't think of at the moment.
There are 2 many songs to list.

I doubt there's anyone that's done 10% of what Prince has in this regard.

No matter how these artist relationships with Prince ended they all must say that the minneapolis genius put them on the map and gave them a chance.

I can't think of another artist that put so many folks in the biz.

I would say James Brown. Though he may not have made a lot of "stars," he did have a long roster of talented musicians that played with him that moved on to fruitful careers as well as those that he wrote songs for. Lyn Collins Bootsy Collins Bobby Byrd
I know I'm missing more, but these just came off of the top of my head. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Interesting. Not a single musician in the bunch. Dr. Dre is 95% producer.

Jill Jones Mayte (she probably wouldn't have gotten far on her That's Incredible appearance) Carmen Electra (I think she's a waste of make-up, but she'd be nowhere without Prince) Tamar

Yeah but all of those acts are 100x more popular than acts pushed by Prince, besides Daz from tha dogg pound plays keyboards, drum machine etc like Dre, Eminem has produced some of his own tracks too [Edited 11/30/11 10:47am]

I understand. Producers did not come 2 mind because most producers work with a ton of different artist.

You know the producers behind these acts do know their music most of the time, this clip shows how a lot of hip hop records get made:

My post is about Artists.......not producers.

A lot if you count the roster of Paisley Park and the earlier proteges. They may not have become big stars but they've all achieved a level of success at what they wanted to do. Even though some of them choose not to do it any longer. The fact that 10 to 30 some odd years later we still look back on them and follow up on what they're currently doing has got to be worth something to them all. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I get ur point, but still in the video u can see the artist in the studio while the producers are making the music telling what he wants them to do and what he wants to hear so it's not like they just bring him tracks.

Dez?? Mazarati?? That's reaching considering they did nothing notable outside of Prince's world. Why not add The Game Boyz, Millenia, Jill Jones, Kip, TC Ellis, That fake Eminem kid from The Daisy Chain, etc. See where this is going?
Vanity, Appolonia, Eric Leeds, W&L, The Family, Sheila E would likely have had the exact same careers with or without Prince's involvement.
Flyte Tyme leikely would have found a way into the business one way or another. Terry would have MADE that happen. But Morris Day would likely never have achieved the level of fame he found without Prince.

What about the songs other artist have recorded that he wrote?

I sort of agree with this perspective... Not to be a cynic or hypocrite because I still enjoy many of the protege albums, but I'd hesitate to say that Prince has launched many lasting careers (all a matter of opinion of course). Other than Wendy and Lisa, Jam & Lewis and Morris Day's brief acting career, none of the protege acts really succeeded outside of Prince's circle of fans or beyond Prince's writing, recording, producing and image make-over.
Maybe it's a matter of semantics but to me the difference between artists like Wendy & Lisa and The Family for example, is that Prince gave W&L the exposure and clout to develop and forge a career based on thier own talents; with The Family, Prince exerted such tight control over every single aspect of the "band" it's tough to know exactly what thier talents were.
Also, as the poster above suggested, a lot of so-called protege artists either already had developing careers before being associated with Prince, or certainly the potential to succeed without Prince's involvement. Everyone knows the man is mega-talented but I'd stop well short of calling him a star-maker.
As for the number of people who have had hits with another artist's songs, I'd have to put Lennon/McCartney and maybe Stevie Wonder well ahead of Prince for the time being...

Lennon/McCartney actually wrote songs 4 other folks or are u talking about cover songs? That is 2 different things.
I certainly was not trying a say Prince was a "star" maker but he put a lot of people on the map. Back 2 my original question, how many other artist have put so many people on the enetrtainment map?

We all know the extensive list of associated artists who's work with Prince gave them their break, but beyond what is the subject at hand here?

Can u name some of the artist whose careers were started by Lennon/McCartney and Stevie Wonder.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
sure, he's started a lot of "artists" careers.
but he's just as quickly ended them.
like it or not, Carmen Elecrtra is Prince's only real lasting legacy in this area.

OK. Some of these people are band members, some of them are "proteges" or produced artists, but you wanted to discount producers, so..... I don't know how to answer if there is another pop music artist that has had direct influence on other acts' careers.

I can't think of any artist, outside of Prince's inner circle, who didn't already have singles before recording a Prince song. But Prince certainly has been successful in giving people stage-names that stick. Tamar Davis (who blows the roof off in Madea's Xmas, btw) was Ashley before Prince. Carmen, Appolonia, Doc Fink, there are a lot of folks still using names Prince gave them.

That is a good point. | |

Prince has been a leader in this area for sure but he tends to do it as an extension of himself and his sound I think. I also think artists like Rick James (Teena Marie, Mary Jane Girls), Babyface (Toni Braxton, After 7). It is funny that alot of artists haven't gone down that road especially while still doing their own music. A lot of so called artists have become producers such as Puffy, Timberland, and even Pharrell and had successful endeavors.

Outside of The Time and Sheila E, none of those artist were really "put on" or made into stars. Prince has introduced a lot of artists but most have been flukes, one hit wonders or mediocre acts riding P's coat tails. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer.

how about Phil Spector? the artists he launched also have the benefit over Prince's of having some actual hits.
