So is the Linn on Raspberry that 'chuk a le' sound behind the 'boom pa pa boom' beat? lol

Not exactly. That is the sound of a flanged and delayed Linn side stick sound.
The dry version of that sound is in “The Beautiful Ones” and “Something in the Water”

Linn drum sound samples can be found at
http://machines.hyperreal...m/samples/

DL the zip, open and listen to the "sstl" sound. Then you will understand what it's all about.

I remember at the Celebration year one, P had the Linn machine out so folks could play it, recreating beats of yore.

I've tried to replicate this sound on the pc using the FXs on Fruityloops but can't seem to get it right.

Has anyone managed this yet?

This beat was created on AcidPro 2.0 with the samples posted above. It is NOT a sample from Let's Go Crazy. Upon further listening, I should have added a high-hat on each quarter measure and some reverb on the drums to get the exact sound of that song, but you get the idea. The rest is just some stuff I'm fooling around with.

Dear Tom,

Have you not been paying attention?

ELO’s Producer was Jeff Lynn, not Roger Linn, inventer of the Linn Drum.

Linn's first products 1979's LM-1 and 1982's Linndrum revolutionised music technology. "The products that I wanted to use just weren't there at the time so I just put my love of music and technology together."
Although the Linndrum is acknowledged as a classic of its time, and still has celebrity patrons (Prince's 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' utilising its cymbal-less tones), Linn's early products have not obtained the kitsch celebrity of say, the Moog. "The early machines that command a lot of interest tend to be analogue" he explains. "People are using sequencers nowadays rather than drum machines, so the technology's kind of advanced beyond that."
Indeed, for Linn the eventual application of his machines and their descendants particularly the Hip Hop standard MPC-60 that he designed for Akai - is a world away from what he envisaged when, as a session musician, he devised the concept.
"When I originally made the product the music of the time was more constant, there were pitched notes," he says. "DJ music is largely backing tracks there is no foreground melody or lyrics'85that's been stripped away and
the beat is all-important.
"It holds interest for me, but I'm not as passionate about it because I'm 44 and everyone I think is most passionate about the music of their teens and twenties, and they just become old duffers after that.
"Back then I was a big fan of Clapton, Beck, Hendrix," - a situation that he sees as "Highly ironic."
Indeed, drum machines have become ubiquitous to the point where it's difficult to imagine the fervour they first inspired. "It was a complete revolution. People would hear them and just start smiling because this box appeared to have a human being inside it. They couldn't quite reconcile the contradiction."

OK Anji, listen to "If I was your girlfriend", then listen to "I can't wait" by Bilal and Jaguar Wright (came out less than a year ago), and you'll easily find out what they have in common

Peace

Prince continued to use the Linn drum until Grafitti Bridge. Even Batman has a few tracks whose rhythm bed was created with the Linn (Scandalous). Susan Rogers said that he wouldn't simply use the presets - they would send the lines out to echo chambers and overdrive the outputs to create really unique sounds. Like in "...Girlfriend", the rhythm track in the beginning is being overdriven, sent to various processors and eq'ed and then sent through a digital repeater to achieve that slammin' groove. On some songs the Linn tracks were augmented with electronic drums like in "Let's Go Crazy" or real cymbols like in "U Got The Look".

Prince pretty much abandoned the Linn, using newer computer-software to create his rhythm tracks (especially for Emancipation) in the 90's, until he decided to pull out the old equipment during the recording sessions for Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic. You can hear Linn drum tracks on "Undisputed", "Tangerine", "Prettyman", "Jukebox with a Heartbeat" and "Props N Pounds".

I love that sound!! Prince has the most innovative drum loops of all time!!
I was actually examining Prince's drum-sounds last night.

He seems to have 3 from his classic period:

1) A normal drum beat with a rattling sound (eg.Let's go crazy, computer blue, 1999)
2) A spraying sound (eg. Sex shooter, She's always in my hair)
3) An amazing percussive, snare drum type-spund (The beautiful ones, Raspberry beret, Loop in Purple rain film with girl crying)

i think 'When doves cry' actually combines all 3 and is probably the ultimate use of the linn sound.

But it wouldn't be innovative if he used it now would it???

That was then. It was good then. But leave it well alone. With John Blackwell he has infinitely more possibilities. These days programmed drums are just poor substitutes. U can't beat a real drummer.

What Linn drum did Prince use / Which one did they let you play with at the 1st Celebration? I was just curious as whether it was the Linn 1 or 2. Anybody?

THANKS!
