1985 Zappa quote "Prince was right" about USA 4 Africa/Live Aid

Kinda funny though it's probably been posted here before.

In 1985 interview on Howard Stren Show while stating

why he didn't participate in Live Aid (and calling it "probably

the biggest cocaine money launduring scheme of all time!),

Frank Zappa at one point claims: Prince was right for not

participating in a "buisiness oriented bogus chairity event".

7:08 to the end:

Prince said plenty in "Hello".

Geldof and Bono have said since they were very naive at the time about it all, and had changed their tactic on acquiring money from governments, and people have to be careful about taking a cynical attitude towards charities. Look into them and see if it's where you want your money to go.

He bullied a bunch of people into doing Live Aid, but he felt if he didn't take strong measures and basically laid a guilt trip on them, it never would've been as big as it was.

Bob got a title out of it, some friends in high places, but it also cost him his marriage. He's not living filthy rich, either.

Zappa was politically savvy by then, but he also made tinfoil hat comments over the years, too.

This is interesting, but...Band Aid and USA for Africa weren't the same thing,

Of course Prince was right. He who follows the crowd....eventually falls off a cliff.

Prince may be right about a lot of things in the music industry. It is the way that he articulates it that always seems to make himself look like an ass mad .

Prince won.

In the beginning I would agree with you but over the last few years he has gotten much better at explaining it all. Even if some do not agree with him I have always been puzzled at the anger that some people on this board and even the media have had toward him concerning his stance on the music industry.

How was he right? bottom line it raised millions of $'s and probably saved thousands of lives. I've got the USA4A DVD and have seen how the money was spent. Self promotion could hardly be avoided, it might possibly have been the point for some involved in it all, but really fuck them.

As for Live Aid, it would have been better for having certain people take part.

He projects a certain smugness, I think that is the off putting part.

I know he really doesn't like to be interviewed, so maybe the smugness is really just shyness. Anyway, he comes across in a negative light most of the time when he is being interviewed. (Boy George is just the opposite. People say he is a total ass in reality but he comes across as a fun and likeable guy in the interviews I have seen of his>0

Prince won???? You know, considering Prince has done so much, I'm pleased that there's so little of his work that I personally find offensive. Sure, there's those sex, & religion filled songs along with alot of profanity, but he hasn't really done anything in that vein for a very long time, & in any case, there nothing to beat yourself up about. Whereas, there are a number of acts, most notably, Eminem, who regularly spouts very derogative views on disabilty/people with special needs, and unfortunately hardly anyone seems to make a fuss about that. But this is the one song of Princes' that really disappoints: 'Our record stands tall, there's just as much hunger here at home'. Really? Has the U.S really suffered so much over the centuries compared to Africa!!! And as for a 'record (that) stands tall', well, I should hope so, considering that they've been the most powerful nation for so long. I'm sure they could do so much more. But I'll give Princey the benefit of doubt; he was young and naive, & I'm pretty sure he doesn't hold such views anymore. Sure, Band Aid/ USA for Africa might be seen as cheesey, but that besides the point; its all about generating as much money for a very noble cause. Prince did his bit by contributing a song for the album; he was especially shy then and wasn't comfortable to sing along with his peers (that he admired, well thats how he explains it). But to then write a song like 'Hello'??!! Its just too mean, & I just know he's not like that any more. I hope.

He did take part. He contributed a song to the album. Him showing up that night woulndt have made any difference in the funds recieved. As if there wasn't already enough star power. Like Prince being there would have made any difference.

'Oh Please', what do you mean? Honestly, don't you think saying 'theres just as nuch hunger here at home' is one of the most crass things to say when there are so many people in the rest of the world (i.e not in the U.S, not in the west) without shelter, clothing, food and water! This was Prince annoyed by the fact that some (wrongly) accusing him of not taking part. He contributed a song for the album which is good enough for me. He shouldn't have let the backlash get to him, cos his response makes him sound like some ultra right wing, neo-cnservative despot.

He is a cocky guy it does not make him the devil or what he has to say wrong. George may come off as a likeable guy but a likeable guy does not chain a dude to a wall and hold them captive.

So do not judge a book by its cover.
