Whatever Prince has done Bowie did it first!

The more i get into the whole Bowie world the more i realise that he without a doubt has been the biggest inflence on Prince. Prince would of course acknowledge this if Bowie were black. What a joy it is to work your way through the vast Bowie back catalogue , forget any greatest hits cds just buy a handful at random and enjoy. here's some things that Bowie did way before Prince:-

1] Long before those bikini briefs and suspenders were a twinckle in Ps eye Bowie was dressing like that in a big way around the Ziggy period.

2] Bowie wrote , played, produced and arranged tonnes of stuff and like P is underrated as a musician.

3] Bowie went through a slow build before he hit big with Ziggy and then when that launced him into global stardom his creativeness knew no bounds and the albums and ideas flowed.

4] Ahhh the sharing of huge egos.!

5] Bowie went through the mid 80s chasing trends and sounded pretty bad only to return to his true self and get that real creative urge again.

6] Bowie and the internet - need i say more.

7] the slick suit look, did it long b4.

8] How funky is bowie?, the answer is tooo funky [listen to beauty and the beast].

9] Bowies whole thing is about artistic expression and has been a lot more honest.

10] the constant change in 'sound and vision' was done b4 as well.

I can go on and whilst Prince will always be my number one dude Bowie has gotta be acknowleged as the first and most original. Who else agrees?.

I love Bowie, but i don't think he has been a great influence on Prince.

Bowie never said: "i wanna fuck the taste outta your mouth!" smile

Just about to say something like that myself! Whenever people ask me what music I like it's always Prince first, and Bowie second... I'd say Beck has really felt the influence of both though.

Having said that, Bowie IS a very nice man. He was very approachable and chatted to me for a while as he was signing copies of his last album in Oxford Street not that long ago. He's extremely articulate and intelligent, which is quite amazing considering the amounts of drugs he's done.

No, but he did say "suck baby suck. give me your head."

I too think the trajectory of Prince's career has a lot of similarities to Bowie's. I have a whole essay I could write about this but I think I'll save it for another thread.

Could this be a reference to Ziggy album outtake "Sweet Head"("...while you're down there...").?

Pretty tame stuff in comparison.

lol My only barrier to listening to Bowie has been that he just doesn't appear to have that something about him that's eccentric. Maybe it's because he's English; he just seems too normal to me. smile

Personally I don't think there should even be a compairison between the two. I think that Prince is more creative and personally more attractive, and has more tallents.

Yeah, and all rappers wear baggie pants, theres lots of funk artist, theres lots of (if you will) weird artists. Where is the influence. Maybe there is but has never crossed my mind.
I do say Bowie is a great musician and performer. Your points are too broad.

Bowie and Prince have a lot in common artistically, but I believe, as someone else above mentioned, some of the points are too broad.

I'm sorry but you must be stoned Mellow Gold is perhaps his weakest album (though it is still GREAT) After Mellow Gold, Beck went on to make one brilliant album after another! You crazy, dude!
