It's nothing to do with disagreeing. I couldn't care less if anybody dislikes the new version. I'm not the one getting angry and saying your opinion is wrong. I really dig it, end of story. I also love the original. This isn't a zero sum game.
Acting like Prince just raped your mother, killed your father and brought ultimate shame upon the beloved halls of funk mecca simply because he recorded a new version of a song he never originally released in the first place, almost 30 years ago, and that we've all only heard because it surfaced as a low quality bootleg full of muddiness and tape hiss, and YOU happen to not like it, is so much of an overreaction that you need to go outside and spend some time in the real world.
Once you do that, you might be able to disagree with someone without accusing them of "drinking purple kool aid" and "giving Prince dap" for "crapping out a piece of shit". All over a song, which some will enjoy and others will not..... like every other song ever written.
But OK, whatever, I'm the one drinking purple kool aid. I'll be sure to remember that next time I want to talk about a song I like. |

I think it's funky. It gives me hope Prince is thinking about his legacy whilst trying to encourage new fans. I played this song to a whole heap of non-Prince fans who really like this. "I have a date with Lisa. Isn't that wonderful?"

Hate is telling orgers they're 'dumb fans' and 'drinking purple kool-aid' in every other thread. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and shouldn't be belittled or chastised for it. It seems everyone on here has forgotten that this version of the song is just a way to promote his current tour and band. This version of the song showcases the abilities of his current band. He obviously recreated it with them in mind... Sure it lacks the energy, feel and power of the original track, but that one was created when he had a band that had that energy, feel and power to showcase that in a live setting would that be necessary... This new version has a different energy and feel that suits his current band and they can play perfectly... Would be kind of weird to release the original to promote this tour if his band can't deliver and make it as generic and empty sounding as, say, "Mountains"...
Do I like it? Of course I don't... It would be more fair to his band and himself if he had created a new song... But this way he probably thinks he's pleasing his hardcore fanbase by releasing a songtitle they love and pleasing newbie concertgoers by releasing a new song that he and his band can play as is during the tour... And marketing wise it's pretty slick since he has people on here talking about it and creating a buzz...
Comparing the 2 versions is not exactly fair... If it was possible for Prince to go back in time and recreate "Colonized Mind" with the "LoveSexy" band people would be saying the same shit...
Maybe he'll wake up one day and release "1999" with all the shelved tracks unedited, but in the mean time, if you don't like the new version, do as I do and never listen to it again and spin the original again and be amazed at what he was capable of...

Trust me, I think it's safe to say that if Prince raped my mother and killed my father, you all would be on here, for one, to say it was probably their fault for getting Prince mad, and two, to mourn the death of a certain 5'3" aging, used-to-be-funky singer, cuz his ass would have to be identified before they even knew it was him. I live enough in the real world for both of us combined, which is why I know when something is ridiculous rubbish when I hear it. So, stop getting butt hurt because some of us don't love every single thing your little hero has recorded, obviously, on the toilet.
And there you go AGAIN, telling someone how they should react when it comes to his music. If YOU think it's good, then someone saying it's a piece of shit is "overreacting"? You see, I say someone's a purple Kool-Aid drinker for loving even the dumbest of shit Prince says or does. And that is a TON of people on this site.
And yeah, if you call THIS track "funky", then yeah, you ARE bringing ultimate shame to those of us who know what funky truly is. But hey, what you like is what you like.
I'm just hoping one of the other two versions he's done of this song is a HELLUVA lot better than this shit.

Check out this guy, ranting and raving on the internet all because he doesn't like a song.
And I'M the one whose supposedly "butthurt"
Guess I'll keep drinking my purple kool-aid. I'm sure it's much tastier than your bitter, salty, angry, red-faced tears of outrage because a musician released a song you don't like and other people happen to like it.

Well, when that orger's opinion is the same, gushing shit about whatever it is Prince does or puts out, then yes, they're a purple kool-aid drinker. For sure!!!! No one (most of us) belittles someone with an opinion, but when the person has the same dick-suckin' views on Prince, then we call that shit in a heartbeat! Though, some shit is just smack-you-in-the-face obvious, and we have fun with those that can't even see THAT shit!

I was worth enough time for you to go out and find a ridiculous picture of your dad to throw in your post, so I guess you probably were butthurt. I don't and can't get red-faced, nor am I bitter or angry. I'm pretty chill, esp since I have my older tracks and videos of his to listen to. I don't need the "garbahge" he's putting out.
Keep on drinking your kool-aid (as if you were ever gonna stop). Even if I did have bitter tears or outrage, they'd still taste sweeter than what's in the kool-aid. But, whatever. I'm done with you and this conversation. It's taking the thread "off-topic".

That said, he could have just made everyone happy by releasing it as a 2-track single on iTunes with the original version as track 2, even cutting out the rape section. He really wouldn't be out anything. But I'm sure people would find some way to piss and moan about that, too.

That's exactly what I don't like about it. Any time an older artist, not just Prince, tries to get new fans, it always means them watering down and weakening their music because people that weren't into their type of music in the first place, have weaker tastes. Andy is a four letter word.

So many with their panties in a wad... Hilarious!
Maybe it's just me, but I don't feel the track(s) deserve such strong feelings on either side of the argument.
The original is a great little outtake, a treasure for fans who have heard all the official releases and want to go deeper. But, IMO, that's all it is. I'm glad it wasn't on 1999. It shouldn't be. It would have made a good b-side and it would be cool on an extended/remastered edition, but the original album as a whole would not be better if it had been included. Again, this is my opinion, not a fact, so, no need for it to upset anyone.
The new one? S'alright. Not great. Not crap. The only thing that is bad enough to complain about is the rap. Andy should stick to the style of her remake of We Can Funk (Love... whatever) and never rap again. This opinion seems to be consistent among even the fans of this version. That said, it's still better than anything the major labels are releasing or radio is playing. Once more, it's an opinion, that no one is forced to agree with.
Debates, and even arguments, are one thing. They certainly have a place when discussing such a topic, and, can even be fun. Hatred and personal attacks over opinions of a song(s) is kind of retarded.
Just my not-so-humble-OPINION.
All that said, it is worth getting pissed about the (lack of) distribution on the track. Only available from 1 source in 1 country?!? I'm callin shenanigans. Because I have no legal option to buy the track, I obtained it illegally. I'm not ashamed. I would do it again. I would have gladly paid for it if there was an option to do so. Next time Prince bitches about illegal downloads he can kiss my ass.
Now MY panties are twisted... [Edited 11/25/11 9:49am] Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

Ooooooo, good one. Make that 11-0. I'd rather have my own mind and know what TRUE funk is than run around here and spit out that it's just amazing he's "doing ALL of this" at the age of 50-something, as if that's the prerequisite to getting the keys to the kingdom. Or better yet, he's ultra genius level because of this song and because it's just SOOOO hard to redo a song nowadays and make it sound a sooo different (and shitty, might I add).
Continue to rack up all the points you desire. This isn't a ridiculously scored game to me, nor was it ever. It's just a simple matter of you "fams" kissin' his ass and loving damn NEAR everything the man does (and tries to see the positive in ANY of Prince's situations where there is NO positive to begin with), like a CD of him taking a shit, or "Extralovable 2011" as it's known by you fams as.
I'm just glad I have the one TRUE version of this track. The original. [Edited 11/25/11 9:51am]

I have always liked the original version but prefer the new one - it has a nice flow to it
I'll take any new music to add to the vast colleciton & wish he would rerecord more of the vault and release it - he knows we all have that old stuff anyway so it is refreshing to put a new spin on them like he also did with 'in a large room with no light'

Prince slowed the tempo from the original, which makes the groove more 'danceable' & allowed for his vocals to connect with the listener more effectively. Sort of like a genius move.
Do I like it? Yes ma'am, I do. Quite a bit more than the original. Which I really dig as well.
This is an Extraloveable for the grown n' sexy. And ironically, this version could help Prince establish a new, younger fanbase. I can easily imagine this song following a Rihanna or Katy Perry cut on a Pop station; lil Wayne, Drake or Minaj on urban channels; and would definitely get heavy rotation on the grown and sexy urban stations as well.
PS
To those of you who have dismissed this cut, as if it were the 2nd coming of 'Purple & Gold', just remember the Marination Rule. On average, you have to give a Prince cut at least 2 weeks/100 spins before you really begin to dig it, or decide to throw it in the shxt-bin. (Although I only needed 34 listens in 4 days to permanently retire and expunge 'Purple & Gold' from the memory banks of my mind) How many times have we made the reactionary gesture of outright dismissing a Prince cut, and then slowly come around to an all-out lust for the same song?
And even if you don't 'come around', be wary of adamantly clinging on to negative viewpoints. You hardly give yourselves an escape route and portray a very unappealing sense of zealotry. It's alright to close doors; just don't deadbolt the locks... [Edited 11/25/11 10:06am] [Edited 11/25/11 10:18am]

So what? If it introduces them to his music, then that can only be a good thing. There's so much great funk music I discovered through it being sampled in hip-hop music. It doesn't mean new fans "weren't into their type of music"... they may not even have been born during those years. You love funk music just as much I do, but you were lucky enough to live through an era where it was played heavily on the radio and TV.
Personally I think as many young music fans as possible should be exposed to Prince's huge array of talents. If it means he has to do something contemporary for that to happen - then so be it. Some old school fans won't like it, sure, but there'll be many new fans to make up for it who will then go on to discover his incredible catalog.
Artists should ALWAYS be trying to get new fans and not simply cater to their existing ones.
I was always a Prince fan growing up, but I remember when "Rave Un2" came out - a lot of my friends weren't familiar with him but they were sold on that album because of modern contemporary artists like Eve and Gwen Stefani being on it. Now they are fans.

If someone digs the song, good for them. If someone don't dig it, good for them.
But going on and on about it in 200 pages is too much.

Which is kind of sacrilegious or a paradox.
The 'grown n sexy' ELoveable is akin to Darling Nikki lyrics changed to:
I knew a girl named Nikki I guess you could say she was n danger of std's
or when The Rolling Stones had to change the lyrics of Lets Spend The Night Together to Lets spend "some time" together..on The Ed Sullivan show..where Mick even rolled his eyes to the lyric change

it's funny though, some people do the same with the associated artists music, like with Gaslight. They diss Prince's music but as soon as anyone says anything bad about FDeluxe or O7 or any associated artist music, its like omg, how could you! you haven't listened to it right or enough times!
