Rock and Roll HOF nomination question I'm just wondering if Prince and the Revolution & Prince and the New Power Generation are supposed to get separate RR HOF induction nominations. With all the talk about how his sound evolved over the years, it just seems like the backing bands also deserve kudos. Or does his initial induction cover everything and everybody. Forgive me if this discussion already took place or if the Revolution is already inducted.

I don't think the Revolution have any kind of claim to the RRHOF. They played on a few albums but haven't had a 25+year career as the Revolution. RIP

I thought the nominations are also based on the success of the music they helped create. I know Prince was the Maestro. I just think the contribution of the bands are missing. The New Power Generation is harder because the band has changed so often.

25 years have had to pass since a groups or artists first release. they dont have to have been active for that long. depending on how you want to count it, the first album with them listed as part of the artist (not just his backing band) was purple rain, which has been over 25 years, so in theory they would be eligible. i seriously doubt though that most people outside of the revolutions fanbase would count them as a separate entity rather than just being part of prince, so odds of them getting in would be pretty slim

They were only credited on three albums. NPG would never get in. Neither would any of Prince's other associates, including The Time (except for Jimmy & Terry, they may get in later as songwriters/producers) and Sheila E.

i can see both the time and sheila e getting in.they had significant success and were reputable in their heyday.the time had a very strong following and were a big as success on the r&b charts as prince was.the band was respected well.sheila e is STILL respected as a musician.no other acts of his will get in though

^ I seriously doubt it. With the Time, I think people WITHIN the industry knows The Time's popular records were musically provided by Prince only with Morris Day as the only other member on most of the records. Jesse Johnson was the third most significant contributor to the records. Jimmy & Terry stand a better chance getting in with the songwriters/producers, I want to say "Musical Excellence" category but I'm not sure. Sheila E. doesn't stand a chance, I'm afraid.

for a while i though they might but not now. there is not enough difference between Prince and Prince and the... so I would think not. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

It's up to the committee as to who deserves kudos. If a few critics feel the bands that worked with Prince warrant an induction, they'll be on the list. As long as they recorded 25 years ago, they're eligible. The argument would have to be over the specific albums the Revolution were on, and how much of an impact they had as a band, vs Prince being the one man show.
It's going to be no different than when NIN are up for induction, will it just be Trent Reznor, or will it be members of the band that have been with him for years? Problem is, he did most of the work on his own albums, so it's prob. just going to be Trent going up and having to thank his band in the speech.
But if you read up on Springsteen getting inducted, a lot of people complained that the E Street should have been inducted as well. And keep in mind Bruce's manager & Steve Van Zandt are part of the committee. Elton and Billy had a lot of the same musicians in their band for years, but neither band was inducted.
It's a question to be raised with music critics, and bugging them to start putting the group names on the ballot lists.
Jimmy and Terry will start being mentioned once Janet is in the running, because once they mention her, they're prob. going to go "oh yeah, Jimmy & Terry produced most of her hits".

I can see Trent getting in the HOF instead of NIN too. And if they ever consider him, Todd Rundgren will be in and not his groups The Nazz or Utopia.

I guess its easier to define if the inductee starts in a group then goes solo like the Jackson 5 and MJ or the Beatles and George Harrison. I realize not many artist are inducted more than once but with Prince I really feel like the different eras with the different bands gave him a variety that most artist don't come close to displaying. It would be nice if it were that easy to recognize them even if Prince gets second the nod too.

^ Thing was Prince got famous off HIS NAME alone. He didn't form The Revolution until well deep into his career. They were initially The Rebels, his background group, then it gradually grew from there... if he had started as a member of The Revolution, then it would've been an entirely different story.
