What type of guitar do you think Prince prefers? A Strat or a Telecaster?
Also what exactly is the difference between the two?

Check out those Phil X youtube clips! He can show you the guitars. Aside from appearance you need to listen to the tones. I mostly like the orange one that he used in Gent for the first show. It means that he'll some some rock-like materials. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Prince seemed to prefer custom-made guitars for nearly 15 years (from Purple Rain to Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, roughly). They came in rather odd shapes and their designs didn't resemble either Telecasters or Stratocasters that much. They were very expensive guitars and no one else played similar ones.
He played his Hohner Telecaster almost exclusively during the early days and he started to play it again around the time when he changed his name back to Prince. The Hohner Telecaster is a very cheap guitar, although Prince must have changed some parts of it along the years. It has surprised me that he has started to play Stratocasters during the last decade, because he had never played them before. Some people say that Stratocasters are his current favourite.
Telecasters and Stratocasters aren't that different. The difference is like between having your hamburger with ketchup or having your hamburger with mayo. Rhythm guitar players often prefer Telecasters while lead guitarists often prefer Stratocasters. However, that doesn't mean that both wouldn't be suited for playing rhythm guitar parts and lead guitar parts. Telecasters tend to be a bit more "twangy" while Stratocasters tend to have a more of a "singing" tone. However, the amps and effects that he uses probably make more of a difference in that regard instead of whether he is playing a Strat or a Tele. They do have a different feel to them though.

Actually, his Hohner telecaster is very different from a standard telecaster. It has the shape of a tele, but nothing of it's sound nor twang. The Hohner uses 2 strat pickups, very different from the standard telecaster's pickups. So, the Hohner is more a strat then a tele, soundwise.

The Telecasters he plays are Hohner copies and have different pickups
The Stratocasters he plays are custom pick ups, Infact they are the same pickups as the cloud guitar.
So I would say neither as he has had to customise or compromise with both

I definitely want something that can play a song like Purple Rain
I love Jimi Hendrix and Prince so I want a guitar that can shred like them!

If you guys had to pick between a Strat or a tele which would you pick and why?

Both are great. Tele usually has a more gritty warm sound. I prefer a tele

The sound of the Strat may sound great but I think Prince should´ve kept playing his trademark guitars, like the Cloud or the Hohner. He still plays the Hohner but he hasn´t touched a Cloud since 2002. The Strats look a bit too boring in my opinion. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I think I'm gonna stick with a Tele

Oh shoot lol
Did Hendrix play a Tele sometimes or did he just stick to a Strat?

It's about the sound not the look. The Cloud is nice for some of the stuff he does, but when he does something like "The One" on Musicology tour, the strat is much more effective for the sound of his band during that era. @KoolEaze [Edited 12/27/11 12:41pm]

Apart from the OP being smokin' hot, I prefer when Prince plays the strat. Listen to it on the Montreux dvd's! Super nice sound. I got a strat myself, first I wanted to buy a tele, but the sound was too fat, and the neck was also a bit too big. C-necks for the win!

I personally can't stand anything he's done with the strat. Not really the guitar's fault; he's processed the hell out of the sound, and to my ears it's awful. And they look too big on him (as they do on me).
Telecasters on the other hand suit him perfectly. He makes that shitty Hohner sound incredible, and they fit him well too.
My first electric was a Hohner (les paul copy), and my friends and I had a good laugh when we saw he and I were Hohner guys.
