High "Album"???

Its probably been discussed a million times already but I've just got it and its brilliant. What happenned with it? How come such an excellent array of tracks weren't released properly?

It seems to me that this could've been a hit. Its very "old" prince, if you can understand what I mean, and is considerably better than the official releases that came out at the same time. A fantastic "album" or collection of tracks like this should be released properly. So why wasn't it??

well i guess it was just 4 NPGMC members...in downloads.

im not huge on it,but my faves r :

Supercute (just killer rnb)
When Will We B Paid (live drums owuld have been better instead of KJ's Pgramming)
Daisy Chain (wasnt 2 in2 this until i watched the video again)
When eye Lay My Hands On U (kooky, odd, sexy, brilliant!)
Gamillah (very sexy instrumental...a small preview of the 'new direction' that was 2 come)
Sex Me,Sex Me Not (some cool fun, last real piece of the 'old prince')
the rest r actually really good trax now i think of it...
but i gotta be in the mood 4 it.
luckily...there is a prince song 4 every mood

I heard HIGH and SUPERCUTE at one of the 2001 Hit n Run shows and was floored. I thought those songs were so cool and catchy. When I got home I was able to find them on the net and enjoyed them even more.

As members we had the songs but think about it "High" and months later "The Rainbow Children"...

What is the generally accepted track-listing (though Prince said there was no album, just some tracks)?

This album wouldve been appalling!!! Sure its OK if you dig mid 90's prince or that early 90s junk like Diamonds and Pearls but High simply doesn't pass the test as a fully fledged album. It's far worse than Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic. Each to their own but Prince would've covered his own grave in dirt with him in it, if he had released this effort.

NPGMCsucks

I didn't even realize those songs could be combined together and considered a complete album, until I saw people mention it on here. They don't really fit together at all.

I'm glad he at least provided new tracks each month during year 1, but I didn't care for 90% of the tracks.

I didn't think there was really an album there either...just fans throwing tracks together...

That's spooky. I was thinking of using that exact same picture for my copy, but couldn't find a decent quality jpg.

It's worth noting that 'The Daisy Chain' and 'Gamillah' are actually NPG songs, not Prince songs, as so would not have been on the 'High' album (had it been released). They belong to the unreleased NPG album 'Peace' recorded around the same time.

hmmm... while I think "High" IS a great album, I think a lot of it's charm comes from the fact that it was an unreleased album that he put out through the club. Imagine if it had actually been released. Some would still love it. Many more would hate it and say that after Rave, they can't believe he continues to put out this "shit" (their opinion, not mine).

Releasing it through downloads takes some pressure off of it. We get it, he gets to clear the decks, but there is very little expectation as to what it should have been or could have been.

It's very much like the Black Album in that way. While it remained unreleased, it had legendary status. It was a gem. Everyone seemed to love it. Since its release, however, it's kind of a ho-hum album. The reviews said as much, and I've seen people around here express the same opinion. If it had remained unreleased, it would have retained its charm and importance amongst the fanbase.

Songs from NPGMC year one credited to 'Prince'
(and therefore contenders for inclusion on the 'High' album)

Vavoom
High
Underneath The Cream
My Medallion
Silicon
When I Lay My Hands On U
Sex Me, Sex Me Not
Supercute
U Make My Sun Shine
Golden Parachute

also:
Props 'n' Pounds
Y Should I Do That When I Can Do This?
Judas Smile
Jukebox With A Heartbeat

The first 10 tracks listed are almost certainly from the 'High' album, as they have a common 'sound' and were mostly recorded solo by Prince. The final 4 may or may not have been included. Personally, I'm not sure that 'Props N Pounds' or 'Jukebox With A Heartbeat' would've fitted.

All other tracks released were credited to 'The NPG' or 'prince', and therefore had already been seperated by Prince as belonging to other projects.

Strangely, my least favorite track from 'High' is the title track. It just seems a bit trite and silly. It would have been the equivalent of calling The Rainbow Children 'Wedding Feast' or Controversy 'Ronnie Talk To Russia'.

"Underneath the Cream" is truly one of Prince's worst songs ever...that rap is of a quality even Robbie Williams would be ashamed of (another guy who shouldn't rap).
