By the time Around the World in a Day dropped, Prince was completely over it.

I mean...think about it. Around the World in a Day, for all that it was released a year later, was in the can before Purple Rain came out. Personally, I think there are elements of it that were inspired by the Purple Rain project. Raspberry Beret is clearly inspired by the motorcycle ride through the country in the Lake Minnetonka scene and the barn scene. The "Love is more important than sex. Now I understand" ending of Temptation is a major theme of Purple Rain. And elements of it (his onstage "conversation with God") were incorporated into the Purple Rain tour.

He probably didn't even consider a tour for that album because the Purple Rain tour came after he recorded Around the World in a Day. And he was on to the Cherry Moon/Parade project almost immediately, too.

Yep I agree, that's why when people connect ATWIAD with Parade I disagree,

Parade & Dream Factory would have been the cousins

Purple Rain & ATWIAD are cousins, not Purple Rain & 1999

yes the Raspberry Beret video animated scenes totally come from the deleted Barn scene from PR the movie

I find it easy to mix into an ATWIAD playlist certain songs from the PR era like God the Dance Electric

SOTT wasn't even close to Purple Rain music, it would still have been a drastic difference

the opening of PR:Let's Go Crazy vs the opening of SOTT:Sign o the Times

they would have love more music along the lines of the Dance Electric, Traffic Jam, Roadhouse Garden, Our Destiny, Possessed

agree. sign o the times is markedly different from purple rain and would have confused fair weather fans more than ATWIAD did. from dirty mind to 1999 prince was largely evolving new wave funk, and while it's definitely still there in purple rain he also develops his pop melodies. i see songs like take me with u as cousin to raspberry beret. ATWIAD will always be the album that defines prince for me. there seems to be an american obsession with unit shifting equating quality, whereas in europe we seem to value subtelty and eccentricity. example being lovesexy, bombed in usa but was a no.1 in uk and overwhelmingly hailed as a critical masterpiece.

I guess I like hardcore Funk,Rock more than *snip* Pop and Fluff.Of course Lovesexy scored big in the UK and bombed here in America.Europe seems to embrace the Gay Vibe (David Bowie,Lou Reed,Boy George) and Fluff Pop (Duran Duran,Wham!) way more than Americans do.I'm beginning to understand the love affair with ATWIAD now.

* Moderators Note:your use of terms faggot & Gay Vibe are not called for and are disrespectul to the members who are gay. would u like the term Ni&&er Pop and Coon Vibe used?

Do I really give a f**k if you do?Keep in mind that my opinion is what it is.If you like ATWIAD or whatever,Good for you.I happen to think that it is full of pretentious wannabe 1960s Beatle biting,Weak,Overblown s**t that had no business being released.Prince's inspiration for even concieving that garbage was Wendy and Lisa's hands wrapped around his nutsack and whispering in his ear.America voted and concluded that ATWIAD was the nail in the coffin of a rising Megastar named Prince. The Hood told Prince to go f**k himself after that record and Hip Hop and New Jack Swing took off after that.

ATWIAD sold 3 Million in the U.S.That would be expected from the follow up Album to Purple Rain. But once people took the record home,Guess what?Prince went from being Elvis to Pee Wee Herman.Prince fans deserved better than ATWIAD.

it's been scientifically proven that if you were locked in a room that contained nothing but a tea cosy, in 20 years you wouldn't have had the curiosity or inventiveness to even fashion a hat.
