Guitar! (the song) When this song came out, critix dismissed it as a lame U2 rippoff and my first reactuon was the same. "I love U baby, but not like I love my guitar." Is that really the best you can think of? I wondered. But it actually may sum up Prince's life better than any of his songs. And when you listen to the lyrics, they do say something about the trappings of fame ("I tried 2 tell U, it's hard 2 be a star). And it's the kind of track that really comes to life in concert. And a great song (by Prince or by anybody) does not have to be serious in order to be good. So I love this song! Can't get it outta my head! It's a forgotten classic! Any thoughts, anyone?

It bores me to tears, the arrangment sounds like someone running through a sound check. I found it very repetetive & lacking any imagination. It's just a vehicle for him to play yet another mean solo live imo but to each his own. [Edited 11/14/11 9:51am]

I love it deeply and madly in all its forms, except for the acoustic Prince/Andy version.
His performance of "Guitar" on Leno is my favorite Prince performance of all time.
I've shown it to countless kids and told them, "THIS is how you play rock guitar!"

"I love U baby, but not like I love my guitar."
Great lyric!
Then there are the two different studio versions. The first one being released on 3121.com right around his Superbowl performance. The second version as track 2 on 'Planet Earth' (and a Verizon commercial?).
Now that I've totally schooled everyone on when and where this song emerged, here are my awesome thoughts:
It's a latter day Prince classic.
That's it. That's all i got.
Prost! "Whatever skin we're in
we all need 2 b friends" | |

eye AM Fully convinced the song is about TAMAR and how she tried 2 go around him and sign a seperate deal when he was taking 2 long 2 put her album out. Also Prince Credits Tamar and the Tamar Tour with making him fall in LOVE with the Guitar again.
