Prince lyric screwups

So anybody got any Pince songs they sang lyrics pretty incorrectly?

Here's some examples

"Maybe I'M just like mother"- When Doves Cry

"I got a line in my pocket and baby he's ready to roll"- 1999

"I guess I should have known by the way you parked your car sideways in the woodland grass"- Little Red Corvette

There have been a thousand 'misheard lyric' threads (hell, my sig has one example), but from the title of the thread, I thought you were looking for examples of where Prince screwed up the lyrics on a studio cut. So I have one of those:

In the album version of I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, I'd swear that Prince says, "I asked me if she wanted to dance". Does anybody else hear it that way?

PRINCE: the only man who could wear high heels and makeup and STILL steal your woman!

Yeah I hear that too....

"ladies and gentleman, now features Queen". - Partymam ("no pictures please")
"So Buddy Holly did you come to party?" - Partyman ("somebody holler...")
"I came - I was dead and gone" - Head (the wedding gown line)

"Everybody wanna see U dying 4 the cum, it's bad enough being a real mans son" - I can't stop this feeling I got

...there are loads I've misheard over the years - ill think on it yoday

I had a friend who absolutely swore for all the time I knew him that the lyric in insatiable was "let's relax and have some wine" instead of unwind - couldnt convince him otherwise

Steve Wright In The Afternoon (UK, 80s, Radio 1 Show) used to have a slot called "Twisted Lyrics".

I always remember the one from PR;

"Honey I know, I know, I know times are changing" sounds like "Honey I know, I know, I know God is a Triffid"

Every time I hear that line I always think of that.

Ive never realised how wrong I'd got Soft & Wet:

Hey lover I'm so glad you came

All I wanna see is the love in your eyes (Hey, lover)
And all I wanna hear are you silky lies

And my favourite...

I'd get so lost in your muff
Its The best, I feel it everyday (Every way)

1+1+1= 3

"Let me see you shake your hands/pants? We don't give a duck what you got on."

...Wait, those ARE the lyrics.

disbelief Prince really quacked up on that one.

I knew the muff bit was wrong but it wasn't until earlier, when I looked up the lyrics, that I realised the other bits too.

I know I've misheard loads but can't remember them all..im sure I've misheard something in Bambi for years too

It's actually much dirtier. "Hey lover, I got a sugarcane I want to lose in you but baby can you stand the pain"

I thought he was singing "The Cross" but it turns out he was singing "The Christ". Who knew!?!?!

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

"I Love U In Me" - "When we're makin' love it's like surgery", kind of a stupid lyric as he was trying to come up with a rhyme. Great song otherwise, IMHO.

On his Stick Like Glue rap, I thought he said, "I'm just a friend of your mother's."

Of course he says, "I'm just in front of them others."

Why is it "stupid" and what makes you think he was "just trying to come up with a rhyme"?

Its a type of metaphor, a simile, and the word "surgery" is very specifically used - you're supposed to interpret what he is saying, not discard it as someone struggling to rhyme with the word "me", which is incredibly easy to rhyme!

Dewrede suggested "Symphony", but that would invoke an entirely different idea to the one Prince is conveying. Surgery is precise, clinical, but also invasive and penetrating - and the use of such an apparently unrelated word is deliberately disarming, demanding attention.

I always thought surgery was a good use...it alway implied to me that it was meticulous and effective - perfect

I'd say almost all of The Rainbow Children is a lyrical screw-up.

I used to think when Prince sang "sing it for your nation y'all" in 1999, it was:

"sing it for filet mignon"

shrug When I finally listened to the lyrics properly, I realised that it sounded nothing like that "filet mignon". lol

On his song Chocolate Box I thought Prince was saying: "So what's the deal are you smoking some weed or are you riding in a limousine" and "this discotheque is bout to make me erect my feet are singing louder than the band."
...bing ain't lie.
