I Don't Know Bo...But I Do Know Math. Seriously, LMAO!
Dear Prince,
Heavy D's very last tweet was "BE INSPIRED!"
I have to let you know that those lyrics from "White Mansion" just INSPIRED something fabulous! The funny part is I couldn't remember where they were from, until I looked them up and I couldn't do anything else but LMAO!
Thank you! I really do mean it! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I'd post the song I'm talking about itself, but unfortunately I can't. I'm no longer even mad about that and that took some serious doing.
I did name it though. Find it and listen to it. The rest just falls into place.
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

You decided not to sell your publishing rights? The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

No it's just a well known phrase taken from the Bo Jackson Nike advertising campaign (a very famous and awesome college and NFL (Raiders) running back, well famous if you like American Football that is).
Google/Wiki will explain it better than me. [Edited 11/11/11 3:28am] Just somewhere in the middle,

oh! so why does prince say i dont know bo but i do know math?
simetimes im sure us europeans miss the american refs
i remember in 90 think wtf is a peter paul almond joy?????

The campaign was "Bo knows" and it was about the things Bo knew - "Bo knows football," etc.
Once you know that, it's pretty self explanatory.
Sell my publishing? What a laugh. I don't know Bo but I do know math.
In other words, there is a lot of money to be made from his publishing rights and he knows that. He isn't about to sell them. That's why he's living in the Big White Mansion. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I always heard it as a nervous laugh. He knew the publishing rights would pay more in the long run than he was being offered for them at that moment, but he's having a bit of trouble maintaining the superstar lifestyle after breaking away from WB, which is why he would even give it (i.e., selling the rights) a moment's thought. Plus, it's lonely in that big white mansion.
I love that song. A rare moment of honesty, showing his vulnerability. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

The ad campaign came about because Bo Jackson played professional football and baseball.... "Bo knows..." Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

For sure he mortgaged his publishing

it isnt remotely self explanatory...........
:i dont know bo" taken literally means he doesnt know a person called bo
and one is to summise that this "bo" is either a character or sportsman or musician in american culture.
so no it isnt "pretty self explanatory"

Not only is it self-explanatory once you know about Bo and the whole "Bo knows" campaign...but it's pretty much been explained by about 15 different people on this very thread. It don't take Stevie Wonder to see what the line means.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
thus its not self explanatory UNLESS you know who 'bo " is/was
which i didnt
thereby negating the point "self explanatory"
sheesh. | |

Which is why she said, "Once you know that...." That whole sentence hinges on that introductory clause.

OK - Prince made some reference about Bo Jackson that you Euros didn't get back in 1996.
To make up for it, he's toured your continent incessantly the last several years, totally ignoring every part of the USA that isn't NewYork or LA.
ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?

Ha ha! I'm sure there's young Americans who don't get the refs either - just like no one remembers Big Daddy or Abba Zabba (gosh, candy names sure were more risque back then! was the "big stick" a popsicle?). "Bo knows" is ancient too. Anyway, your post reminded me of this: What American English Sounds Like

I was talking to some guys from Burma and they did a mock american english voice. It was fuuny. it sounded like english sounds and seemed to have some of the same syntax. but it was not words and it was not like just gibberish... "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Regardless of the Bo Jackson reference, not knowing "Bo" about something is well known slang anyway, even here in the UK surely? Saying someone doesn't know Bo , or doesn't know diddley , has been around for ages. Similar to not knowing diddley squat... So the lyric is understandable anyway. Prince is saying I might not know diddly squat but I do know math and selling my publishing rights would be crazy. Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

Precisely - "don't know Bo" is a well-known saying and, although I'm not familiar with the Nike advert, had heard it many times.
Believe me, any "Euro" with half a brain got it without it having to be explained on the .org! [Edited 11/13/11 12:04pm] ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...
