I think the best example can be illustrated in just a few seconds of the song "Damn U". He sings the song in a high register, but in the line "All I'm trying to say is that my psychodelic shouts when you damn me. Damn you..." his voice briefly dips down deep for the "when you" part and effortlessly swoops back up to the higher register for the rest of the line.

That one line has always stood out for me as evidence of Prince's vocal range since the first time I heard it.

Prince's vocal range is very under rated.............

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

I think his most girlee falsetto is the song For You, he sounds like a hedgehog be thrown on the fire. His deep voice is hard to measure, but some of his gruff bits are in "How come you don't call me anymore" - its also some falsetto too. In Do Me Baby, you get the contrast too, when she is doing it to him and he is saying "Are you going to sit there and watch. Pheromone, Temptation, Insatiable are also good examples of hi and lo singing. Prince has always been a master of his own voice

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Ummm..... I hate to always be the one to have to call stuff out, but... c'mon. Serious question. What song is Prince NOT using an effect to cover vocal failings?

You'll have to tell me. So, let me get this straight - you're saying that most Prince songs have a vocal effect to cover some weakness in his vocal? Please elaborate.

So, are you not going to answer the question?!

Yes.

I would like to hear such an arguement, as well.

Prince is an überprofessional with his vocals.

But,

i would also agree that he may have allegedly perhaps dabbled in a wee bit of general voice tweaking in the recent past.

It's really not that hard to fathom.

Prost!

It depends on what you mean by "tweaking". You'll have to be more specific. If you're referring to his recent use of Autotune, that is not used to cover a weak voice, it's used for a specific effect.

As I said before, Prince has used all manner of effects on his voice throughout his career - but none of them are because of a weakness in his voice. He is one of the very best male pop vocalists around, with one of the largest ranges. To accuse him of having a weak voice that is, more often than not, tweaked in the studio to make it sound good, as Funketeer has suggested, is just ludicrous. Perhaps Funketeer has never been to a live show?

Thanks for the approval.

So, still a "no-show" from Funketeer then! And he/she had been on the org since. Far from being the one to "always point stuff out", its been far from it - an unsupported statement that was no revelation whatsoever. Still, I wait with some interest for a response!

Mindflux, the consensus here is that you win this argument. I just watched that "Gotta Broken Heart Again" video from the Aladdin show (on another thread) - and everyone knows he can sing. And he's not fond of people who can't sing, or play instruments, who pass themselves off as musicians. Perhaps you can correct me, but I think he said in an interview that it was Jimmy Jam (or Terry Lewis? probably JJ) who convinced him recently of the artistic uses of pro tools and autotune?

Thanks for you insight on "Erotic City" too.

Hi artist76 and you're most welcome. It was Terry Lewis that Prince cited as convincing him to use Pro-Tools. That does, however, require a little clarification, as Prince's albums have been MASTERED on Pro-Tools for around 15 years, so the use of Pro-Tools HARDWARE is nothing new to Prince. What I think is referred to in that interview is Prince using Pro-Tools DAW (or software) for assembling and arranging the track, which is different and what Prince didn't do before. Previously, Prince was still recording to tape and using hardware effects and such and then mastering the result in Pro-Tools. Now, it seems, he has been experimenting with working in an entirely Pro-Tools environment. Hope that helps.

Thanks for answering.

There's a little bit overlapping discussion on the thread Prince and Technology. Perhaps steakfinger there means "an entirely Pro-Tools environment" starting w/ Lotusflower.
