Sooo, it was probably 4 years ago that i first tracked down the December 31st, 1987 show with Miles Davis and fell in love with it and all that jazz, but that's not the point.

The point is; i'd never consciously really heard Auld Lang Syne before then...and even though it is a pretty fun, muck aroundy version of it ("come and get your rope! get all your rope!...modern technology...") but it just thought it sounded so amazing and the kind of interplay between Purple Rain and it...

I guess that's not even the main point though...

MAIN point is; I figured it must be this fantastically great song that there are heaps of good versions of by other people and to this day, not that i look often, but i have done on a few occassions, and never found one giving the same vibe as Prince's.

The melody is in the Danny Boy, Amazing Grace league, but the covers just suck.

I came across the Mariah Carey version and not that I'm a fan of her, but i thought it would maybe have a cool, singeryish style to it...but it's just the cheesiest remixy sounding song ever.

So yeah, anyone know of any/share the same view on P version?

so, i'm sorry if i offended anybody's forum sensibilities...

I truely enjoy watching his version, and get tickled when he stated he didn't know the words to the whole song and did what he does so awesome....plays

I really dig Prince's version of it. And Purple Rain that night was crazy good. I've never watched the video, but the audio boot is a must-have.

Fusing those two songs was a great idea. I love that performance. It was the last thing I listened to last New Year's Eve before leaving the house.

Mariah's version was actually my introduction to Prince' music, given that I was a big fan of hers at the time. When Prince was interviewed in a radio station back in 99, he was asked about it and said that he dug it, but he wished she could've sang it solo instead because it wasn't meant to be a duet. Turned out what I thought was an extremely emotional performance was only a glimmer comparing to the original.

Sorry, there's nothing to contribute from my end beside that I have to check out this performance, thanks for the heads up.

Before I just had the audio of this and never understood that part or what was going on for Prince to say that. Then after i got the video I understood and laughed at it. Prince trying to let loose the celebratory new years ballons but the netting wouldn't budge, hence the stage crew Matthew "come get your rope" comments lol.

I love Prince's soloing during the Auld Lang Syne/Purple Rain performance.

Both audio and video are essential.

Just heard this for the first time the other day... love the entire boot, but the Auld Lang Syne/PR performance is definitely a highlight.

I'm so glad the view is shared by so many. I was worried at the start!

It's such a great performance, and the first time you hear it, how strongly the Purple Rain factor is messing with your head. Love it!
