I would say Prince did that to avoid people saying he was gay like they did MJ. He was a tiny dude in high heels and sequins, but he was surrounded by beautiful women, so no way he was gay. Homophobia used to be much more acceptable and mainstream than it is today.

Does anyone here remember Barry Gibb talking about how insecure Jacko was regarding Prince? He said he could never understand it but Jacko would cry and keep asking who he thought was the better artist.
Saw it in a documentary but can't recall which.

EVERYTHING about the video is wrong. But, the song is so listless and boring, not even a Thriller style video could have saved it.

quincy or rod not write it??
who wrote bad? | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Prince was so wrong for scaring MJ in the early 80's with a "present" years before the Bad proposal I could imagine MJ being superstitious and scared for real cause of his religion, and it makes me laugh a little, but not in a mean way, cause from the way people talk about him then, he reminds me of how I used to try to be in my early 20's and laugh at it

Of course Quincy or Rod didn't write Bad! MJ did that one all by himself...

Seriously? Anyhow,no I don't remember any of this but thats funny as hell especially if its true. I read a VERY similar story in the Enquirer(dont ask lol) about MJ but Emimen was the target. I do remember Barry Gibb just gushing about Prince in a VH1 artists special...Prince was 18,MJ was 40. [Edited 11/13/11 10:38am]

Agreed. But so did MJ and 90% of musical acts.
It's always been about sex, drugs, and rock n roll regarding the biz.

I thought this was an interesting documetary but I thought they missed an angle that could have been quite interesting to explore - Janet Jackson and Jam & Lewis.
I wonder how both MJ and Prince reacted to their sibling/ex-colleagues working together - especially when Rhythm Nation dropped and was a massive Minneapolis sounding record. MJ must have been furious to hear little sister yelling 'Minneapolis' on Escapade. Prince must have been laughing at Janet's back turning on her brother and his production values whilst also, probably, being quite annoyed that she had gone to 'the opposition' in the form of J&L. Interviews with these three and the conversations they had about their erstwhile family and friends would have been insightful.
I aso thought the end of the documentary undersold Prince, to a large extent. It gets to the break-up of The Revolution and fails to really mention the esteem Prince was held in for Sign O The Times and Lovesexy - especially peculiar as this is a European Documentary. Prince was massive in Europe at the fall of the 80s. He certainly eclipsed MJ artistically during this time. I wonder if it was merely the fact that MJ didn't release anything during this time that they left it out.
That said... I love hearing Eric and Allan Leeds talk about their time with Prince... they still sound amazed at the heights of popularity reached by him. Also, I would have loved to have heard the barbed outtakes from Wendy and Lisa... if they were allowed to elaborate on the themes re Prince's distancing himself from the band and thmselves.
An enjoyable film. | |

I found it interesting on Lovesexy there's a voice that says "there's a bass guitar in this (Dance On), is that Janet? Also on Diamonds & Pearls Prince thanks Kathleen Battle, she doesn't appear on his album but on Janet's. And how many times does he ask "who wrote this?" when he covers What Have You Done For Me Lately? It's all probably just good natured teasing back and forth with Jam & Lewis, but sometimes I wonder what the story behind the scenes is.

I need to go back and listen to me some Dance ON. I don't think I've ever heard that voice...
The banter would have been light-hearted at times and would also have been smothered in vitriol at others. Remember, these were the two 'proteges' who went off and had the temerity to have commercial success without Prince's permission. How Dare They! I wonder if they rival him in album sales - minus Purple Rain... maybe including... I shall have to go and find out.

I remember like it was yesterday... I was a wee young skater and moved away from the pop scene. I stopped listening to Prince when Lovesexy came out. Love the album now, just was not something I could get into back then, American hardcore was way more important and better. Anyway, at my friends house and we came inside from skating his ramp and MTV had a big "world premiere" thing going on. Being fans of thiller, we decided to watch. I thought it was a joke, seriously. You can take risks and I respect that but I could not figure out who in the world is going to like this song? One of the worst/silliest songs I think I have ever heard.
After I heard the first line I told my buddy that "Wierd Al is going to tear this song up". Your butt is mine? I'm with Prince on this one.

Prince told this story to the few of us lucky enough to attend the ONA soundcheck here in Seattle before playing a bit of 'Billy Jean' Occupy Alphabet Street!

imagining Prince's face while listening to Escapade, that's funny
The song Bad didn't stand out right away to me either as a kid though I remember it everywhere, but when I heard it again in the 90's and saw the video in full though I did see it in the 80's when I was very young, I loved it so much! But I think it was the other Bad era songs that really made me appreciate the era when I got to know them when catching up, and it's now my favourite era. [Edited 11/16/11 17:14pm]
