WonderU: I haven't listened to it in a long time, I generally like it for it's simplicity in the way I like Speechless, though the latter is much better. I love the bridge a lot though, that's my favourite part of the song.

NoveauDance: There's nothing Disney about Billie Jean, Morphine or Superfly Sister lol some of his 80's stuff I can understand.

Even though sometimes Prince's side cracked me up, like with the story about the voodoo feathers and charms, I think this is just immature and insecure behaviour to put down another great artist. I know it wasn't Prince though, and his people.

MJ did his thing and Prince did his. Under The Cherry Moon, the LoveSexy tour including the masterpiece Alphabet Street and Batdance were some of the greatest points of his career. I appreciate his musical diversity throughout the time period too, but I don't like every single song, just couldn't get into it, but the performances overshadow it all so I don't really care and the ones I love are brilliant. Bad and Dangerous are tied for my favourite solo Epic albums from MJ, Bad era is my favourite for multiple reasons. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it has to be my favourite MJ era. I respect Prince for not participating if it wasn't for him, better than making an ass out of himself if he's not into it.

Because the were the 2 top performers who happened to be identified as black

that's it in a nutshell.

I wonder if Prince was white yet at the top of his game at that time would they compare Michael & Prince

I have some good stuff on that time period, from 1983-1988 with Prince & Michael,

they had some competitive fun stuff between them.

Prince beating Michael @ ping pong, hitting Michael in the groin

then Michael turning around and wanting to do Bad with Prince

I still love the James Brown show were Michael did his thing and had James call Prince up

Prince was already in his 1st Avenue 1983 PR vibe, riding on the back of Chick

Hi OldFriends,

Would you be interested in making a thread devoted to "1983-1988 with Prince & Michael", I ask you because I always enjoy your informative threads devoted to the different eras of Prince's music. I am a fan of both Michael and Prince and but I was a toddler when these two were at the height of their careers so I have no real knowledge of their friendship.

If you do not want make a thread devoted to thier friendship or you think it would ignite a Prince Vs. Michael war I understand. I would love to see some of the info that you have concerning thier friendship so I figured it could not hurt to ask.

Oh lawd, where do I even start with how brilliantly camp these two videos are?

I'll start with MJ:

BAD:

Even today, knowing what to expect, I bust out laughing when I see the MJ video. The "You ain't bad!!! You ain't nothin'" belted out like Paul Lind on helium trying to sound gansta is like an omen that you're in for one truly gay treat. And I don't mean gay like "dude, that is soooo gay.", but gay in the most ass-pounding sense.

The hollering "hoooooo'ssss" and the spitty sounding "dahhhh's" and the gratuitous mouth-whipes only add to the hilarity of the video. Coupled with his frankentien meets Pinhead outfit, sort of like a Dominitrix outfit designed by Vera Wang, and his get-along buddies dancing street gang pose', how could one not laugh their asses off?

Then to make it even more special, the scene where MJ pulls the cover off of the air vent, and let's the air whip through his greasy jerry-curl mullet like a York Peppermint Paddy meets Soul-glo commercial bests any hair twirl Charlie's Angels ever had, making your slippery slide into MJ comedy hell complete.

MNIP

Now, this video is a real treat. The Judas Priest meets Zoro the Gay Blade outfit is amazing. But where MJ's bad is just one giant sausage party that stars on overgrown boy-child with extremely bad fashion sense, Prince throws in a Latino bombshell with an Egyptian-inspired identity crisis and plump, red, shock-absorbant DSLs.

Taking ques from The Sound oF Music where Maria manages to run from the top of the Guntersburg down into the abbey (a 35 minute drive) in about 5 1/2 minutes, Prince's Paisley park party spills out into the narrow allyways of downtown Minneapolis erupting into what amounts to a very camp rave, but with black people. It's a video that defies logic and the rules of pyshics. There's everything in this video--homoerotic hip hop dancing, Prince making some very strange hip gyrations in heels and a gun-mic.. a mysterious box presented by a female with a mighty nice box of her own, god-speak (would our lord be happy if he came 2day?), a Robert Mapplethorpe inspired chain-mask and police cap tha screams "I'm a bottom, but I like pain......hurt me!", and of course the chorus line, which itself is both odd and camp.... "My name is Prince....My name is Prince....My name is Prince...."

But here's the thing.....

MNIP feels insane. It feels unsafe...it feels horendously over-the-top and ballsy.

Bad, on the other hand, like much of the album itself, feels utterly safe and sterile, if not well-composed and put together. I mean, who hasn't listened to Dirty Diana, and thought that it was a safer version of Darlin Nikki---basically Darlin Nikki but with a condom on?

Bad is a production...a show.

My Name is Prince is art of both the lowest and highest form.

Both.....are.....hilarious.

Let's be realistic here: there is NO competition as some people are trying to convey. Michael is NO match for Prince. Just to think that I used to be an enormous MJ fan...!

The reality is that Michael, apart from dancing and singing, is untalented. But, then again, I'll give him credit for having been probably the greatest dancer in mainstream music industry and, until the Bad tour, a fantastic singer. Apart from that, however, there is no more Michael Jackson. He is non-existent, as a talent, in any other area. To any of this opinion's critic: can you, as an adult, listen to the post-OTW work with a straight face? After OTW, his act was nothing more than childish, ridiculous and laughable while Prince became better and better.

I realized, a long time ago, Prince was much better than MJ when I did this; I had "The most beautiful girl in the world", "Batdance", "Cream", "My Name Is Prince", "Alphabet street" and some PR hits on my mp3 but never listened to it. I was a huge MJ fan and was listening to Bad and Dirty Diana on my mp3. I then, for some reason, changed to Prince's music. The distance between the quality was so unmistakeble, so unmaskable that it hit me. I changed to "Bad" again and realized how ridiculous it sounded. Not to mention the video. From then on, I came to my senses: Michael Jacksons (at least the one post-OTW) is for children, for Justin Bieber's fans while Prince is the real deal.

With Michael, you get controversy after controversy each day that passes. One day his family is trying to scam you, the other a scandal bursts. In the middle of this, some mediocre and cheese songs pop up. With Prince one gets music.

Like Wendy said: "Michael is Disney."

I'll always be the first to say that Prince had more musical talent than MJ...But you going off the deep end with all that other talk...lol...There was nothing "childish" about that Jackson's Triumph album or Thriller...And hell, as much as I joke about some of the Bad album, there's some truly strong moments of songwriting on that album for Michael...

Slow down homie...

Well of course he laughed: it's a silly-ass song with a silly-ass video. Of course good and bad are subjective and saying it sucks is only my opinion, but I have to say I'm pleased that Prince agreed with me - at least at the time. I don't know if he would laugh today, but I'm STILL laughing.

Interesting. You think Prince's music is unquestionably "better" than MJ, so u stopped being a fan of Michael? I guess as soon as you find someone who's musically "better" than Prince, you'll be so ashamed of ever being a fan of Prince.

With Michael, you get controversy after controversy each day that passes. One day his family is trying to scam you, the other a scandal bursts. In the middle of this, some mediocre and cheese songs pop up. With Prince one gets music.

Judging by your other posts about the family members, you actually seem to care enough to know about the family drama. Honestly, it's not that hard to decided NOT to give a shit what's going on with the Jacksons and just take MJ as an artist and listen to his music. The choice is up to you, and you chose to care.

but DANG pre 87 before the face mashing mike was so damn loveable and naive!

Disagree. That was his detriment. That is what kept him a fringe character.

MJ had the Micky Mouse Club fans and their mothers and fathers as fans. Which is much bigger contingent than people who like a sweaty little pubic haired genital that plays guitar. He would have been a much bigger artist had he not played that aspect up.

Yeah, it was said that Prince attended one of the Victory shows and (I might be wrong) Chick was there with him. Prince got noticed by some of the crowd and they began to focus on Prince than the The Jacksons on stage. I also read about Michael attending a Purple Rain show. I forgot where I read that from. It could be in Vibe magazine or somewhere. I might be wrong.

Prince overtly flaunted sexuality through his music and image. The difference between him and other artists who do it is that, he was multi-faceted and sang about many other subjects as well, but the image he played up, leading up to 1999 was pointing towards that direction, but a lot of dj's and journalists today are really young and uninformed about these things. When I think of Prince, I first knew of him in about 1986 maybe if not earlier, and I think of him in fancy jackets playing a guitar and dancing around. It could be cause I was young, but he was respected for his music from those around me, so it's sad that whoever thinks otherwise missed out, even if I knew very little about him.
